Halifax Mortgage PPI Reclaim

I discovered recently I had PPI on my mortgage with the Halifax and had been paying a monthly premium since 2006. I cancelled the PPI immediately (in December) and asked to be put through to the PPI complaints department when I was on the phone to the Halifax.

I then filled out one form which was sent to me by the Halifax. 1 week later they called me and we had an open discussion on the phone. 2 days ago I received a cheque for £4,380. I was going to use a PPI company as I was unsure if I would get anything and I am glad I did not.

This is the first time I have ever done anything like this in my life and strongly recommend that you do the same if you, like me, had a PPI policy running you were not even aware of.

Best savings account I have ever had!!

  • How on earth were you unaware of a direct debit coming out of your bank account each month?

The premium based on the figures would have been around £40 a month ! amased Halifax did not defend on this basis and also would have been an advised in house regulated sale so could have easily been looked into a little more, Bizarre !

Halifax roll over far too easy on MPPI. They have had too many auto-upholds on that.

Yes - but they are primarily owned by you and me - the tax payer. So they are happy to pay our money to any chancer who comes along.
  • I had a mortgage with with Halifax back in 1994 which was paid off in 2005 MPPI Was added to it. I questioned what it was at the time. Was told couldn't have the mortgage without it. Even though I had adequate savings to cover over 12 months payments, 12 weeks full and 12 weeks 1/2 sick pay with employer, death in service benefit with my pension and an endowment which would pay off mortgage should I die. Was not given the option of shopping around for a better deal as was given the impression it was a condition of the mortgage and I had to have it with them.

I have put a mppi mis selling claim in but am just curios if anyone else has succeeded with the same circumstances, or of anyone could offer advice.

As the mortgage was taken out in 1994 have I missed the boat?
  • The halifax have just knocked me back?, i had no idea i had even taken PPI on the mortgage. When they phoned they went through the details i told i had a accident and life insurance with another company and they confirmed i had savings of £2500, my mortgage was small and done in my name only wife wasn't on it but she was working. They said i requied PPi and wasn't mis-sold they believe i would of wanted it?? i took the mortgage out 1998 they're crystal ball must be fantastic to see what a wanted back then. At the same time as complaining about this one they said i had a loan dated 2000 they are offering a settlement on that one so what changed in 18 months between the mortgage and the loan?? where i qualify for mis-sold loan but not mortgage

    Confused
  • Most mortgage PPI complaints are rejected. The insurance covers an important aspect of daily life-your home. You also will have signed comprehensive documentation detailing your "demands and needs". So, far from needing a crystal ball, they can indeed see that you wanted it.

Your loan PPI is completely separate, having been sold by different people, for a different purpose and in different circumstances.

The FOS have been rejecting complaint with 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay when it comes to MPPI. Its a better reason with loan and credit card PPI. You bought in 1994. You woudlnt have been given the option to shop around. They dont even have to do that today. Today they cannot make it compulsory and have to make you aware it is optional but they dont have to tell you that you can buy elsewhere.

Death in service, endowment and pension have no overlap with PPI.

So, on face value, you have no case and one that should be easily rejected. However, we dont have your full files or information and banks are very scattergun in how they deal with complaints. I wouldnt be surprised though if they rolled over on it and paid up.

Mortgage PPi and loan PPI suffer different issues. Most MPPI complaints are rejected. Most loan PPI complaints are upheld. Nothing you have said indicates any wrongdoing with the MPPI and you did have a financial need.
