I was going to suggest you call her bluff too. Buy something else from the same website though (she may be shrewd enough to look it up online to see how much it was - yes many will do this) and give it to her for a gift. Tell her that was what the package was and hops she is disappointed so you can give her the real surprise on holiday.

I so don't get this. Why would he want the woman he loves to feel disappointment just so he can have his ideal 'surprise' proposal?

It is not going to be a surprise anyway. They have been together eight years and surely have discussed the future and know they are both on the same page about marriage etc.

Even if the package was delivered under a plain brown wrapper, surely the girlfriend would have enquired what it was, anyway.

If my husband received a parcel that was suddenly whisked away, I'd want to know what it was.

Perhaps it would have been better to have had it delivered to a work address?

I just wanted to say that I hope it all works out in the end. I cannot remember a proposal from my husband of nearly thirty years. We just seemed to set the date and got married. No engagement ring we booked a honeymoon instead.

Why not get a pair of earrings and give them to her to throw her off the scent – do you have an anniversary coming up or her birthday?! You could then even joke that you thought you’d been rumbled the other week when it arrived at your parents…!

This is a great idea if you really want to make it a surprise. Good luck!

Same here. I'm sure given the amount of time you've been together she's been expecting a proposal anyway- so why are so many people suggesting OP buys a random bit of jewellery to throw her off the scent? She's going to end up disappointed, and that'll really take the shine off it.
  • Good luck, let us know how it goes! And I can see why you're a bit upset but in the long run it won't matter :-)
