One other possibility for the laptop issue.
Which wireless channel is the homeplug transmitting on? If the docs don't tell you, an app for the ipad should (anything called wifi analyzer or similar).
I had this problem with an older laptop and two routers. It would connect to one but not the other. Turned out that the receiver in my laptop could not pick up channel 13.

If this is the case, there should be a way of changing the channel on the homeplug.

This is usually a "location" setting. Channels 12 through 14 are not permitted in the US, so a lot of equipment is shipping only using channels 1 through 11. The problem in this case would be better fixed by permitting the laptop to use the extra channels.
  • This little gadget from ebay works a treat in our house.....

Arrived next day, under £20, easy to set up and everything connects wirelessly everywhere now in our old Victorian house with its thick walls and difficult wifi signal issues.

I don't think is a channel problem (but I am probably wrong!). After reading this anyway...

  • All sorted now & a huge thanks to all of you who have helped me.

The solution was click onto the wireless, then open network and sharing centre and remove the "Solwise" the one I want to use and then find it again and BINGO.

I can't pick up wireless in my conservatory which is a nuisance cos we spend quite a lot of time in there.

Main cable feed comes into house behind tv in lounge. Modem/hub is upstairs in bedroom connected to a desktop computer which does not have wireless built in so I want to keep the modem in that room, also 2 Ethernet cables for the tv come into bedroom and plug into modem. Therefore I don't want to remove the modem/hub from bedroom.

I tried moving the modem downstairs behind tv in lounge to see if I could pick up wireless in conservatory & I can with great reception, but this is no good to me as I need it to be back upstairs.

I phoned virgin & explained the problem. They suggested a new super hub which meant I would have to have 30mb instead of 20 which I now have. Virgin came today with the new hub but it makes no difference to the problem, still no conservatory reception. Therefore I told my Mrs to tell them I didn't want it. I spoke to the virgin guy who called today & asked him why I just can't have another modem downstairs. He said you can but you will have to have 2 accounts, which obviously I don't want.

If I buy my own modem for downstairs then do you think I can get around it??

Looks like it's back to the drawing board for me, this homeplug is useless. I can't even find it in my network connections anymore. I have tried unplugging both & pressing the reset button too but it's disappeared.

Is it just the laptop which you can't find the network on?

It was working and its unlikely that the hardware has suddenly failed SO
    1. confirm they work with laptop plugged into conservatory SOLWISE via ethernet; if that doesn't work
    2. check laptop works via ethernet directly to router if that works give SOLWISE a ring (but, again, I doubt it is a SOLWISE issue).

EDIT: turn router off for 10seconds and then back on.

None of my devices can find the network. 2 days ago everything was working fine.

Like I said nothing works Solwise has vanished. It always worked with ipads & mobiles from the start it was only the laptop which didn't but I sorted that and everything was working fine for all of 1 night. Only thing I have done is unplug both solwises devices overnight, but when I switched them back on its vanished.icon9.gif
