If your going to buy another maybe have a look at this site, they will let you try it and send back if not suitable and come very highly recommended x http://www.factory-beds-direct.co.uk

Maybe try a topper first. I got mine from duvet and pillow warehouse and it is really good quality for a decent price. There's a lot of information on that factory beds site too which is really useful x

I would recommend a Hulsta bed and mattress. Pricey, but with very long guarantees and worth every penny. The two halves of the bed have separate mattresses and separate (adjustable) slats, so you can adjust it to fit a couples individual requirements. The top and bottom of the bed also can be elevated (on each side, so can be set at different levels) and this can be controlled electronically if you wish (costs about £1400 extra). Mine will be celebrating its 10th birthday this year and is exactly as it was the day we bought it. My parents bought theirs when I was 6 months old, and I will be 47 next month. Theirs is still perfect too! Yes, they are very pricey, but the quality is amazing. It's a German company and they have several showrooms throughout the UK.
  • I suffered with some back pain about a year ago; I could hardly sleep a wink in bed and was about to change the mattress. I never pursued it, more out of laziness and reluctance to buy another mattress due to the one we had being not that old, continued sleeping on the mattress we had and my back is fine now.

Clearly none of us know what is wrong with your back but maybe it's worth trying to sleep on it; it will take a while to grow accustomed to it.

Have you considered asking them if you can pay just the difference between the king topper offered and a superking topper and so get the superking for a reduced cost?

And why is that a problem? Not the retailers problem....

    this sounds unreal.

I almost feel robbed. like have brought something from a market without a receipt.

The one i have isnt worth the paper its written on then ?

I asked my osteopath and she said firm and i still went 1 softer and its still far to firm.

this isnt about liking it, i cannot sleep on it

    Are you mad?

Whereas I feel sorry for the situation you find yourself in its hardly the retailers fault, is it?

You mention its an independent retailer. So you're expecting them to cough up £1000 and give you a refund for something they can't resell? So being up to £1000 out of pocket themselves.

Get real. As someone who runs a small business its unbelievable what people think they can get away with.

For instance, we do aesthetic injections. One woman had it done, then said, no dont like it, changed my mind, refund please. What exactly did she think we could do about it? Time/materials had been spent on her treatment.

She was flabbergasted when we refused because she thought, same as you, that just by saying she'd changed her mind a refund was owed.

For future reference, knowing you have issues with your back and previous mattresses, you should consider going to one of the larger, chain retailers who offer a returns policy. I think it is Bensons who offer a 90 day guarantee, so if after 90 days it's still not right for you, you can swap for another mattress for minimal cost.

It's not good for the independents, but neither is expecting an independent to looks c. £1k on a mattress you have bought and used.

If you are in so much pain, are you sure your back is not the reason you can't sleep, as opposed to the mattress?

And as has been said above, there isn't anything wrong with the mattress because you can't sleep on it. I can bet you my bottom dollar, give me and the mattress 10 minutes alone time and I'll be dead to the world, but I can sleep on a wooden floor if the time is right.

Unfortunately, what your osteopath recommends may not be what you find comfortable. Hard beds are much better for your back, but if you like a soft mattress, then you'll never win!

Your best option is to try to sell it on, write up the loss to bad experience and go buy another mattress from a retailer who will let you return.

    wow, sure pulled your strings.

Its not the retailers fault, i just wanted to know where i stand.

The thread line was to get your attention and my god did it work. You all got talking and giving your opinions which is what a forum site is all about.

I already thanked all the users for there answers and advice.

I never said i didn't like it, i said i cant sleep on it. and still cant.

I'm leaning towards buying a sprung slatted base which i have been reading up on and should work and also maybe a topper as well.

Every body makes mistakes and i'll know in the future :)

    Thanks again everyone

Hi OP, as others have said, I'm afraid you're not entitled to a refund here as the mattress isn't faulty, it's just not to your taste.

I'm afraid that saying you feel "robbed" is a bit dramatic. Like Paulfoel says, the retailer won't be able to resell it, so you can't really expect them to refund you on a used item just because you have changed your mind.

It can take a while to get used to a new mattress, so I'd advise getting a topper and giving it another go for another couple of weeks.

If it's still not for you, try selling it privately and put the money towards a new mattress. This time take a little longer to try out mattresses in the store, lying on it for at least ten minutes. Or as someone else has suggested, use a retailer who offers a money back guarantee.
