Measure twice. Neaten edges, and depending on the fabric it will decide the type of hem.
If you have an overlocker, then you can finish the edge either with the flat lock or a rolled hem finish.
If the fabric is medium to heavy weight then turned up about 2-3cm,
If the fabric is fine, a rolled hem.
If you want a decorative machine stitch, or if you prefer to hand slip stitch so the hem can't be seen at all.
Oh pin, tack, check then your final finish.
(Except- I turn and pin, and stitch without tacking unless it's silky, but I do it all day every day).
I do a hand stitched pair of trousers in less then 15 minutes.
It takes me 10 or less to hem a pair of jeans.
I can make a complete dress in around 3 hours.
A pair of trousers take about 2 1/2 hours and an a line skirt takes about 11/2 hours. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

I have been sewing for 45 years. So I have speeded up in the last year since opening the shop!
I wasn't very fast today.
All I managed was two kids trouser hems, elbow patches on a "cashmere jumper darling", and then shortened two pairs of jeans and a pair of men's trousers.
By then I have had enough. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -
Awww be kind to yourself, you are still recovering from the virus0

Today I will be in the shop on my own so the Children's lessons have been cancelled. I am really not well enough to be standing teaching children yet.
I still have a lot of zips to replace in jackets. The last three have been nightmare jobs.
I hope today to finish the back log but it will depend on how busy the retail side of the business ends up being.
Yesterday I did have a little fun covering some cushions and cutting down a duvet and cover, and making a baby's bed and a matching set for dolly for staffs granddaughter. ( she is the little girl who's the face of the sun in the new Telli Tubbies).
I do miss the making doing all these alterations. By the time I come home I've no energy to sew at home. When I die I will know that I have lived, loved, mattered and made a difference, even if in a small way.0 -

Thought I'd bring this to the attention of anyone thinking of buying a new machine.
I watched the Sewing Bee and noted that they all used Janome machines. I had a Toyota which was a bit of a pain, the thread was always breaking and you had to tiddle around with tension all the time.
I decided I'd buy one of these Janomes. I did research and it was supposed to be good so I got one from John Lewis.
I had trouble with the zigzag stitch. As I tried to neaten the edge of the fabric it sort of cobbled it up in the middle of the stitch. I persevered with this thinking it was me. Also I didn't use it such a lot and forgot about this problem until I used it next time. After my last time I looked on the internet and discovered others having the same problem. It machines straight stitches fine and also the fancy embroidery stitches, but not the zigzag.
It has now gone back to JL and I went up the other day as the lady told me there was nothing wrong with it. However, she got it out and machined some stitches and to my relief it did exactly the same as I experienced and she agreed it was not good enough.
I now await the verdict from Janome on what, if anything can be done. If nothing can be done, I expect a refund. My old c****y Toyota could manage zigzag stitching no problem but not this expensive machine.0 -
Thank you GiveMeMoney
The Walkaway dress is sewn together, it now needs to hang for a while for the bias to drop before I sew the binding on.
What's everyone else up to?0
