How do I find me again?

  • Just to say regarding the light headiness when exercising. I suffered awfully from anxiety and panic attacks a couple of years ago. When I started to feel brave enough to venture out, i started a little bit of exercising because I know it can help with mood and confidence. However I got very lightheaded to the point of nearly blacking out, which then increased my anxiety. After a long in depth discussion with my GP & CBT counsellor I got referred to a respiratory physiotherapist. The aftershot was, due to the anxiety and panic attacks I had been having, I had managed to alter HOW I breathed, and was suffering from Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome. I had to re-learn how to breathe correctly, and although it took some time. I now rarely have any light headed moments. So may be worth getting checked out, as CHVS & anxiety often go hand in hand

I hope this comes across the right way. Reading the above and your very honest and open account of the level of fear you suffer day to day, it is only your dd who is leading a normal life at the moment. You are working as hard as you can to support her and to give her a happy, fulfilling and very balanced childhood. Every parent will know how hard going it can be, even more so when you are doing this alone with little support or any chance of a break. All the while you are eaten up by anxiety and panic attacks trying to function. This is not normal or what you should accept for yourself. I really hope that the counselling sessions you are attending will help you. Have you thought of asking your dds' school to put you in touch with a family support advisor? There is one linked to most primary schools. The woman who has this role at the school where I work is wonderful and has been very useful in helping parents through difficult times and has offered invaluable advice.

May I just say well done for being brave enough to come on here and ask for help like this. I hope you find the responses useful and I am sure this thread will also benefit many others who feel just as you do.

Thank you Marisco, I appreciate your posting :)

DD hasn't started this school yet, she is starting on 24th of this month. I have managed like this for 6 years now and luckily times are getting easier, especially now that I have a wonderful supportive OH. I wouldn't be too worried about asking for support from the school if it was necessary, but right now things are getting easier and I'm now looking to find me again.

Wow!!! I may venture further into this!!! I did make an appointment to see a respiratory physiotherapist last year but unfortunately it was going to cost me £30 ph. Money well spent if it helps with my anxiety but it's just money I literally do not have atm. But I will pursue this with my GP and see if they can help.

    Thank you UL

  • I have been like this from a very young age and my GP is aware of it. It doesn't limit me, I still work and take DD to school/rainbows etc. I have her friends over and she goes to her friends and we have a pretty "normal" life. I have seen numerous counsellors and am now seeing a new one to sort out my health anxiety and panic attacks whilst driving :)

Could you get involved in the running of your DD's Rainbows group?

Re the lightheadedness when exercising, I have vertigo and can get very lightheaded or dizzy when working out but found the C25K was doable. You just rest when you need to, don't worry about not following it 100%. Same with any exercise programme, just do what you can. Also re the C25K, could you not get your DD to take part too? She can walk along whilst you jog it? I use a long straight road on the industrial estate behind my house, and run for 30secs then turn round and run back the same way for the other 30secs. So your DD will be in your sights. May be easier once the nights start getting light?

That's a brilliant idea Flutterby thank you :) DD actually wants to start jogging with me so I will look into this.

  • I enter competitions online mainly I've won some good stuff. I also do papercutting when I get chance but it can be expensive. Where as comping doesn't cost anything :)

    Hi OP,

Couldn't read without posting. You're not alone in this (it was like looking in the mirror reading that!) and your GP might be able to refer you on the NHS.

Please keep us informed of how you get on :)
