Excuse to return wrong size mattress?

I bought a mattress for my bed (sized "king") from an online retailer, but turns out that it's 10 cm too small.
  • UK king size = 150 x 200 cm <- the mattress
  • Continental king size = 160 x 200 cm <- my bed

It's unused, and I checked their returns policy, but it costs £60 to return with their own courier (about 200 miles away).

Any ideas what to tell the seller in order to get it picked up for free? Or at least lower the cost?

Any excuses? Ideas? Feeling pretty blue since I don't have £60 to spare and I work hard for my money.

N.B. It was my mistake mainly, but also their site wasn't clear on these different king sizes (only in one hidden place did it mention the actual dimensions). I'm sure they have their vans in my London area often, so ethically, I don't think there'd be any actual costs for them.

You should be able to return under distance selling regulations and they should return cost of original delivery to you.

Some times in life you just have to take it on the chin and admit that you're wrong.

£60 is still cheaper then hiring a van.

They're not charging the original delivery they're charging the return cost. The distance selling regulations make the buyer pay the return cost.

This happened to me so I stuffed a pillow down the end of the mattress! Simple.

Imagine, selling a UK sized mattress in the UK! ;)

Is it their own fleet? If it's a courier chances they will be charged regardless. Plus they won't get their original postage cost back. And what if the mattress gets damaged in transit on the way back? They can't sell it on again. Plus they're paying their customer service staff and warehouse staff and it's taking up their time. But you want the business to pay for all of this and you won't even contribute even though it was your mistake?
    Hmm.
And people wonder why companies are going bust...

  • 10cm is not much, and you will find it easier to get sheets to fit it if you keep it! If you need to cover the base where there will be a gap get a platform valence!

One thing I always do when ordering a big item is double check sizes! Dimensions as opposed to whatever size they call it!

  • Like others have said, check other couriers, see if they are cheaper.

If you damage the mattress intentionally (like others have mentioned) you could likely be charged for the mattress, the return postage costs and the postage costs back to you if they decide you will not be able to get a refund.

I do realise that £60 is quite a bit of money for postage, unfortunately, this is something you can't get out of.

At the end of the day, you ordered the wrong item.
