Talking of dresses -I've been inspired to get out the sewing machine and scissors and make myself some dresses after reading this article

I had a look at this site and I thought it was v. interesting. I noticed she uses a model to put her dresses on, I noticed on the local freecycle someone wants one of these......spooky!

The fundamentalist housewife on the blessmyhome site wears leggings under some of her dresses. There were pics last time I looked.

Actually I quite fancy the idea of being a "hillbilly housewife", but without the religion.

There are loads of American Christian fundamentalist sites out there. They hold a strange fascination for me -I'm both attracted to and repelled by them. Weird.

I know what you mean, it seems very idealistic, big happy close family, well behaved kids, mother content in her role as homemaker and no money worries. I can't even imagine having 16 children and being pregnant. It looks like the older children have to do a fair bit to help out, which is how she copes I suppose.

Thanks for all the links, very interesting to see how others live.

    .

Sovintage has some beautiful patterns available, especially the 1940s wedding dresses -they're alway for 32 '' busts though  There are also sites out there that sell vintage fabric. Sorry getting off the topic a bit :o

I know just what you mean, even those without the 16 kids. it seems so idealised. It is like The Waltons, I wanted to be a member of their family! Being from a bit of a disfunctional, if not awful family, they draw me to them. But, and it is a big but, I think human nature must get in the way. On some of the sites they talk about beating the children with pieces of wood if they do not obey instantly. Not nice. All this comes at a price.

I think I shall make some aprons as Christmas presents - useful, unusual and you can't buy them easily! ( I remember Laura Ashley selling 'hostess' aprons in the 1970s but they were very expensive.)
Shall set up a production line once I find the fabric.
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.

There are some lovely wedding dresses, I remember looking at the patterns as I intended to make my own wedding dress in 1968. In the end I bought one - for £9.9shillings.

However, my favourites are the undies. I love those wide legged knickers. My dearly beloved and much missed Aunty Margaret used to call them 'easy feels'. :D I noticed in the 'modest' underwear there were knickers with long legs and very firm elastic.

Aunty Margaret also said that it wasn't that the elastic went in many home made pairs of knickers, but that the buttons came off!;)

I love aprons - I have about 6 or so, but still not got a pretty 1940/50s style one! I never see them for sale (and it would be unlikely anyway in my price range!!!) and I don't much want to make one, although I think that's the only way I will ever get one.
Most of the aprons I have either aren't entirely practical (ie don't have huge pockets for me to put stuff in) or alternatively are not pretty - but do have pockets!

As far as "modest" dresses are concerned, my DH once pointed out to me that there are times when trousers are much more modest. We were half way up the stairs in a lighthouse at the time, and he was following me up!:o :o:o
