Santander Debit Card

Hi all

Can someone please confirm for me?

I applied for for a Santander 123 account about 6-7 months ago. At the time I didn't meet the criteria for what they presumably call a 'full account' so was given a Visa Debit card (written on the back was electronic use only and it was un-embossed, writing was flat and not raised) so I presume this was the old Visa Electron.

I waited the 6 months they advised me to do, and kept my account in good order. When I was on online banking i decided to see if I could get an overdraft, and was accepted (only £50, but it was all I asked for). I then call up the next day, presuming that because I was accepted for the overdraft I would be entitled to the 'full debit card', and was told they would arrange this, and she did, a week or so later, a card arrives, fully embossed and raised numbering. Nothing on the back about electronic use either.

Then tonight, in a call to Santander about something totally different I asked about the card, and she confirmed it was a MFC Online card. So, back to square one! Same card, different design!

The card starts with 4757 14 - can anyone confirm if this is electron or full debit?

Thanks

4757 is a visa debit card not a visa electron, cards that start 4757 are Santander online cards or known as the MFC Online cards, where they will dial home to check that funds are available before authorising a payment.

You can have an overdraft and still only be offered the Debit MFC Online card. Cards starting 4547 are Santanders offline card and are known as Debit MFC Cards.

They suggest I go into branch to upgrade - may be accepted or declined, any ideas?

You'll only find out by going into branch and seeing if they will as it will depend on your circumstances I guess. I would have no idea if they will accept or decline.

Are you having acceptability problems with your existing card?

The only online Visa Debit cards that seem problematic are issued by RBS / NatWest.

Does that mean that Santander no longer issue the flat unembossed 4757 14 card ?

I have one issued 02/13 I only use the account for the 0% commission exchange rate, but the ink wearing off the card is annoying.

Not really sure. Funny thing is, I popped into branch today and he said he had never seen one like it before, and it looked 'different'.

Anyway, he upgraded me to a new card, offered me a 1k overdraft and a credit card. 2 out of 3 aint bad!
  • If you've been offered an overdraft then they can definitely send you out a full visa debit card. It potentially may decline it when they try on the system but they just need to refer to the underwriters and they will authorise it due to you having a overdraft.

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending how you look at it) I'm an ex-Santander employee - woohoo, I finally got out! So know that the above will work.

Hiya, didn't take the overdraft, but was available if I wanted it. He said card ordered fine, it was the credit card that was a problem. In this case computer said 'customer may be preferred for credit card' so he took me through application, to be declined
