hi historybuff
just sat down and spent a couple of hours reading through a lot of your diary. You have done so well.
My LBM was just over 3 years ago, when i finally had to admit my credit card spending- I owed £21 000. No excuse for it. I knuckled down and managed to get them to zero a year ago. Its amazing how much you can save and this site has been a huge help.
I actually have 2 credit cards still and spend on them but as soon as I spend i pay it in. I do this for airmiles. I managed to put £1000 in a month so when the big day came and i had paid them off in full, i started to put the £1000 into savings. I do have a couple of months when i don't succeed but i think i am doing well. I do pass on what i have learned to many others around me- although no-one knows about my debt! I just tell them that I read MSE. I see you have grown from getting info here to advising others as well. Doesn't that make you feel good!
Anyway- you were far braver than i was- writing it all down here but many will benefit and be inspired by it. Well done!!:Tweight loss target 23lbs/49lb0 -
Thanks, INOD and globetraveller. I keep the diary to keep myself on track, but if what I have been through can help others, that's great. You're right. I started off on here in despair and knowing nothing, but reading other's posts and getting advice really helped me get my strategy together and gave me confidence to tackle the debts head on.
Well done, for managing your credit cards so well, globe. I've stayed away from any credit at all and can't see myself going back to it even when I can.
I'm now really hoping to have the whole debt gone in a year. The remaining one is pre 2006 and is with the third owner, so I'm going to CCA it before trying a p and f.
Once the debt is gone, I'm going to concentrate on overpaying the mortgage. Then after that I might be able to save!Feb 2014 to now
Unsecured debt at highest £56,511/now £9,328 83% paid.
Mortgage £85,342/now £28,846 66% paid
2018 overpayment total - £5,500
Mortgage and debt free by August 20200 -
Yay! Second payment offer accepted, so I'm now down to less than £10,000 owing and only one predator left!
This is a massive weight off my mind. I'm going to send a CCA request to that one before heading off on holiday and see if I can get rid of that one sooner rather than later. Then I can concentrate on the mortgage.
Happy days!Feb 2014 to now
