Argos have sold me a used item and refuse to return my money

  • By means an an update I have today received a full refund and am awaiting a letter of apology with a £30 cheque as compensation. I'd like to say it is a good outcome but feel more so that it is instead a fair outcome.

Despite the £30 cheque I don't feel like I've profiteered as ideally I would never have experienced this process in the first place. Having said that, a few weeks ago the outcome was very different so I am grateful for small mercies.

The greatest outcome for me is the letter of apology and having the pleasure of returning the item for a full refund to the very store and staff who treated me in such an appalling way. I don't know why but I got a sense of satisfaction from that. It took all my strength however not to verbalise or demonstrate this by sticking my tongue out!

On principal and by virtue of experience I will never step foot in an Argos store again. From hereon in I'll happily shop elsewhere even if it means paying a higher price.

Thank you for all your guidance on this matter.

Hopefully it will actually be a cheque and not an Argos gift card. ;)

Thanks for the update, and well done for not just letting Argos bully you into backing down.

It's very annoying when lots of people give advice on here and never actually get to hear what the outcome of the problem was.
  • Indeed and I managed to return a toy to argos which came from Amazon (little unethical but Amazon didn't deliver on time).

You are the reason that people like OP have problems.

I don't buy stuff at Argos because the 16 day money back warranty is far too open to abuse.

As a student (MANY years ago) I needed a TV for a week till I got one from home. Bought one from Argos used then put it all back in the box and took it back for a refund. Got money back no questions asked..... found the remote under the settee a month later!

As are you. Nobody "needs" a tv. At least have the courtesy to return things when complete.

Ive seen many returns at Argos, where staff member opens box, glances in it - WITHOUT TAKING ANYTHING OUT - and seals back up - giving person a refund.

As shown by the above two posters. Yet, I'm sure they feel they got good customer service, while those who have their returns checked by diligent staff will be offended as they're being "accused" of being fraudsters.

    Look at it this way:

Op's return was checked by a member of staff doing their job. They spotted that it had been used and was sealed by sellotape. Surely there's something wrong there?

The diligent member of staff refuses the refund on this ground and generates a complaint.

Had the original purchaser had the same member of staff, the item would never have got back into the chain and created this situation.

Sadly, the member of staff chose to assume that everybody else was as good at their job, and in doing so caused a new complaint... which, ironically, would not have been generated by a crap member of staff because they'd have just taken the item back and put it into the stock chain allowing for it to happen again later on.

This whole thing is frustrating and I'm glad OP got a refund (and more) but I do wish more staff were like the one OP dealt with rather than the lazy oiks who let faulty stock back into the chain to create this kind of complaint.

But then, if it wasn't for idiots like the two quoted above, this sort of thing wouldn't happen either.
