The serial barcode scanned at Argos would be identifiable to the box. So unless you swapped the contents then when they scanned the Tesco serial barcode then it would not correlate to the original scan.

Goods don't have different barcodes for different shops but they certainly can have different barcodes for the same product but different spec or different manufacturing date/batch numbers.

    Sorry, that's really not true.

If different manufacturing date batches of the same product had different barcodes shops would have to change their SEL's everytime they got a new delivery, which they don't, because they all come in with the same barcode.

Perhaps if they were months and months apart, but it's highly unlikely that the same product for sale at the same time will have different barcodes in different shops.

The OP says that they found a similar one from Tesco, not the same one.

Ah, yes, so she did, thanks. :)

Sorry but it is, you are mistaking a products price orientated barcode with that of a serial based barcode.

The SEL will use the price orientated barcode, when they scan it for warranty issuance then the serial barcode is scanned.

Ask Argos to see if they have had any returns of the processor in that store, might back up your story

its quite a common thing with Argos getting used goods, i once was sold a printer that had been used , ever since i always check items before i leave now

You could be crafty and return to another store, and make sure the processor is clean

I would take it back to another store personally.

I don't shop at Argos at all, I have been a victim of their customer service and their lack of knowledge of consumer rights.

Indeed. Wash it, dry it, package it back up to look new, return it.

    No, I'm not.

An EAN (the numbers a barcode represents) are unique to that product. How do you think putting an EAN into ebay brings up the product you want to sell?

Stores don't scan a 'serial' barcode when you buy an item, they scan the barcode that brings the price that item is on their system. It doesn't matter whose system you scan the barcode on it will bring up the same item if they stock it.

A 'serial' barcode is something else entirely and isn't even on most every day products and is highly unlikely to be on something like a food processor.

I bought an Iron from Argos and it was clearly years old with frayed cables and limescale.

Its clear some returned items are put back on the shelves.

    I had no problem returning.
  • By means of an update Argos have offered to refund £45 on the basis that I keep this 2nd hand item. That is I need to choose to be robbed of £80 or £35. Clearly, given a choice I would rather they stole £35 off me than the £80. I have not however yet accepted as they have not accepted that they sold me a used product or retracted their insinuation that I am a liar/criminal.

We have opened the box today and have since discovered that it has a broken rim. This explains the food in the product as someone has clearly returned this product and Argos have again sold it to me. I will again call Trading Standards on Monday regarding this but do feel that this issue has caused too great a detriment to me that quite frankly the money is now of secondary importance compared to how Argos have treated me.

Unfortunately I expect no favourable outcome as the odds are stacked against me. This is so unjust but cleverly Argos's attempt at resolution calculates the financial risk to me should I decide to buy my pride/dignity/moral belief and take them to the small claims court as to do so would leave me at risk of between £25-£2000 in charges for the deficit of a £35 loss.

I would love to think that justice will prevail but being treated as I have only serves to evidence that this is not always the case.

I'm sure I have zero influence and that in the grand scheme of things my experience with Argos is simply collateral damage which is neither here nor their. I would urge you however to consider my experience of Argos should you decide to ever purchase goods from their store.

Indeed and I managed to return a toy to argos which came from Amazon (little unethical but Amazon didn't deliver on time).
