Saccharin was originally thought to be carcinogenic to humans but we now know it's carcinogenic to rats. But I'm sure there were others that were found to be carcinogenic in humans, but I don't know the names - there seems to be so many sweeteners nowadays.0 -

The same goes for cherry juice, adding lemon or other juices to water. Lemon is doubly bad as it is acidic as well. The same goes for fruit teas which are full of sugar and acid.
You are fine to drink sugary drinks, fruit juices etc with a meal but In between your drinks need to be sugar free. Water is ideal but artificial sweeteners do not cause decay. One in particular xylitol has a lot of evidence to say it inhibits decay. Although it is present in some sugar free chewing gums I am not aware of any cordials in the uk that use it. However it can be bought as a powder to sweeten tea and coffee etc.
My dentist was adamant about me stopping sugary drinks altogether. He claimed only milk (soy milk for me), tea, coffee and water were 'safe'. So I don't know. I don't want to end up having my teeth fall out but it's hard to tell what is safe and what isn't - especially when the majority of our food nowadays has so many additives.0 -
Be careful with soy milk. Many brands are sweetened with sugar as plain soy is quite bitter tasting. E.g. alpro original has over a spoon of sugar per serving http://www.alpro.com/uk/soya-plain0

I have the strawberry alpro soya as I don't like plain soya milk on it's own - fine in cereal though. There's no added sugars and no sweeteners according to the ingredients. But it does state it has 19g of sugar per 250ml carton.0

19g of sugar is around four spoons of sugar. Sugar is added its the second highest ingredient after water. Basically these soya drinks are sugar water with soya added (soya is third highest ingredient) .http://www.alpro.com/uk/flavoured-soya0

Seems I'm scuppered either way. Doubt there's any soya milks (flavoured) that don't have silly amounts of sugar or have additives in.0

I remember reading that any artificial sweetener will trick your body into thinking it's getting sugar, and when it doesn't you get sugar cravings.

I've heard some people use stevia or agave juice instead, cannot comment as I just use the odd teaspoon of sugar if need be.
A lot of it is habit, once you get used to less sweet food, you will find sugary stuff too sweet (and will be able to taste chemical sweeteners, they are really yukky).0 -
Have you tried almond milk or other types of milk?
You could ask your dentist if brushing your teeth afterwards make a difference.
Here's the advice given by the NHS:

My dentist used to say the same to me about fizzy drinks and citrus fruit years ago, then it turned out I had acid reflux, it can damage your teeth, it's something else to consider if you are having problems with your teeth0 -
Agave juice is full of sugar so no better than table sugar and almond milk has natural sugar in it (like all nut juices) in the unsweetened version but most have sugar added as well. http://www.alpro.com/uk/almond
Most milk substitutes are full of sugar as the base material is often unpalatable on its own. http://www.oatly.com/products/belgium/oatly-avoine-avena-bio
You have to steel yourself and kick the sweet habit.0 -

Sainsbury's is similar.
I can't see how using something like almond milk with a more alkaline type of fruit can be as bad as drinking fizzy drinks.
EDIT unsweetened soya milk (checked Alpro and Asda) has the same low level of sugar as almond milk, sugar is added to other versions (although I don't think I'd want to eat unsweetened soya milk, personally).0
