What can I do with chicken wings?

They are one of our favourite meals in this house! Alternatives for coating/cooking:
drizzle with olive oil, garlic and black pepper, and a sprinkle of mixed herbs
drizzle with olive oil mixed with chilli or peri peri sauce
just roast them plain
mix together oil, soy sauce and five spice and marinade
mix together worcester sauce and a little olive oil - marinade
mix together yoghurt, coriander and black pepper - marinade
the list goes on and on - and only makes me hungrier thinking about it lol! Anythin that sounds tempting to you - try it!
I always roast mine in the marinade or sauce we have chosen.
My kids go mad for them - and I always make them for packed lunches for school trips, etc. when half the other kids in the school try to do trades with packs of crisps, etc. (which I don't buy). Always do them for kids parties as well - and apart from one or two kids who only eat chicken as nuggets they are always welcomed."there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
Dear all,
Due to our newly restricted food budget (well completely reduced budget) we have been exploring the cheaper cuts of chicken and other animals!
Today thanks to You tube I learned how to butcher a chicken wing so you get the 2 yummy bits that are easy to eat (flat and drum apparently). I bought over a kilo for about £2.50 and we dined like royalty!
If anyone wants to know the recipes for chicken wings we've tried so far let me know and I'll post on this thread.
Up until today we only bought the wings that had been butchered - whilst still cheap today's experiment made them cheaper.
We had them with homemade coleslaw - cheaper and much better.
Most of my posts on here die a death - I am a thread killer but this was so yummy I'm happy to share if there's an interest :j

Just an idea but you could get a cheap chicken for £2.50 (ish) don't shoot me for suggesting buying such a cheap bird.
And have lots of different meals out of this one bird, save up the wings and then have your wings as a treat???0 -
Please post your recipes Purplepardalis. I sometimes buy a bag of chicken wings from the butcher, I usually do them in a sticky barbecue sauce.
Have a look at this ingenious Japanese way with chicken wings -good for lunchboxes.0 -
I'd be REALLY interested in a recipe that resulted in a sweet, sticky, slightly spicy/garlicky chicken wing - if you have something like that
.
I don't do 'barbecue recipes' as they are usually 'smokey' in flavour which I can't abide. Even when people say 'it's not smokey', I can still detect it - one of my hatreds is when smoked paprika is sneaked into a recipe without my knowing .
Just checked that link, thriftlady - love the look of those- can see the dgk's enjoying them.

Hi!
One of my favourited chicken wing recipes is a 'made up' one that you can tinker with!
This is based on 1 'pack' of value chicken wings that I buy at asda or tesco.
Start with 2 tablespoons of plum jam, (I use home made as theres soo many plums around at the moment)
then add 2 table spoons of hoi sin sauce
2 tablespoon of soy sauce (I use dark)
1 table spoon of rice wine
a pinch of ginger powder
and if you like a bit of heat, add some chillie flakes.
Mix up the marinade and cover the chicken completely
Cook on a rack long and slow - I usualy put the oven on about 160 as if it's too hot the sugar in the jam burns and you get charred bits.
enjoy!
oh and if you fancy a fiddly job you can pick the meat off the wings and use instead of 'crispy duck' and make cheapy chinese pancakes!0 -
Yum - that last one looks fab!
Last night I used:
8 tbs hot chilli sauce
5 tbs sunflower oil
1 garlic clove minced
a few dashes of worcester sauce
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp salt
Warm ingredients through in a pan and leave to cool before mixing with chicken wings and leaving to marinate for a few hours before BBQing or cooking in the oven.
We do a sticky one too but my OH always does that so I'll get him to write it down.
We do buy whole chickens and make them last for 2 or three meals but we love to BBQ so are always looking for cheap ways to do it0 -
purplepardalis - please please post your recipes! My 2 ds's have discovered the delights of picking drumsticks and wings up to eat and since our budget has dropped drastically I would like to make more use of this cheaper meat.
thanksYG

There are some lovely recipes on this thread so I've added it to the main chicken wings thread to keep the ideas together.
