Please why does anyone need a dishwasher unless they are into catering? I have never understood it!
Because sometimes life is too short to stuff a mushroom
Sorry, but yes I know a dishwasher isn't a need, it's a want. I wanted one and got one, dunno why I should have to justify it.whoever said laughter was the best medicine has clearly never tasted wine

It was the one housework task I hated after dinner, I don't mind washing up earlier in the day, but I seem to run out of steam after 6pm. The OH always offered to wash up.... in the morning!! I just can't bear going to bed with the dishes undone so a dishwasher seemed a good solution.
I must admit now I have one I would hate to have to do without it. It changes your life like children do, but in reverse.0 -

You don't! Just curious why anyone would need one. I am not being flippant - this is a serious question. Considering this is an old style thread it seems to me that a dishwasher, along with a dryer, are things we have managed quite well without and, unless catering or running a b and b or something like that I can't see the need.
I have friends with dishwashers and I could have washed the dishes myself in the time it took them to prepare the dirty crockery for the wash, load the thing, wait and then put away.0 -

Its definately a luxury. I got mine when we were all 4 working different shifts. I used to get home as Dh and the kids left for evening shift and I got sick of all the pots. Now I am contemplating getting rid of it as its very very old and I want more storage when the landlord replaces my kitchen. They are very useful though and you can wash everything except the cat in them! Its nice to instantly tidy the kitchen , just close the door and leave it to it.
I often use a small squirt of cheap washing up liquid (less foamy) when I can't get to Bury market for their seconds dishwasher tablets - 3.99 for about 150!

Sorry for going OT again - I wasn't meaning to be knocky
Think it is because years ago when I had a husband and two kids at home I would have loved one, but the then husband said no, it was the last thing he would ever had agreed to, I was the only one who ever washed up and it was my dream to have a dishwasher
Fast forward to the present, is only me and my new partner, he is away usually during the week, so I now have a dishwasher that I load up till its full, might put it on once during the week or every day, depends if I am batch cooking or eating the results of the batch cooking! it gets used more at the weekends though.
OH has sometimes said to me I have washed the pots, my reply to that is, I have a dishwasher for that, more help to me if you scrub the toilet :rotfl::rotfl:
I only buy dishwasher tablets on offer, and it seems you can always find them on offer somewhere, do tend to buy them from Home Bargains as they seem to have them on offer permanently!
It is one of the things I would try to replace if I had to, we are already on our 2nd one, 1st one broke and price we were quoted was cheaper to get a new one!

shock horror I am a singly with a dishwasher and I love itThere is no way its quicker to wash up every day than shove your dishes in the magic cupboard and let it run every few days.
I would also say that I could never get my glasses/mugs or anything come to think of it as sparkly clean as a dishwasher does and my justification is that running it twice a week or so will use less water than filling the sink every time I need to clear the kitchen. Going back to suds and a manky tea towel......not for me .....but each to there own I guess0 -

I got my first dishwasher two years ago at the age of 50...and I'll never be without one again. Revelation. Yes, washing dishes by hand isn't exactly difficult but dirty ones clutter up the kitchen till they get done, it uses more hot water, then you've got to leave them out to drip dry or towel dry them. It takes more time overall, and less space. Whereas with a dishwasher you stack them all into the dishwasher as they get dirty, which keeps the kitchen surfaces clear and your sink empty for food preparation. It only takes a couple of minutes to tidy up after dinner when you're tired then you press the On button and go and put your feet up. Next morning the dishes are all clean and dry, like magic. And it gets the dishes a lot cleaner than my Hubby ever did.
I don't do much "preparation" of the dishes for it have to say. Scrape the plates and rinse off the worst globs of gravy and cheese sauce but you'd have to do that for handwashing too.
I use tablets. I live in a soft water area so don't need anything else. I can get away with the straight formula Lidl ones though I do use 3-in-1 every second or third box. I buy whatever is cheapest that particular week and don't find much difference between them. If I'm not washing pots and casseroles I've got a 30 min economy wash. If I'm using the economy wash I only use half a tablet. I never run the thing half empty, I always wait till it's as full as it can cope with.Val.0 -
After seeing them recommended on the 'which' report, I use the tesco DW tablets £1.79 for 30- they are excellent. As someone else posted here though, my drawer jammed last time I used it and only half the tablet dissolved-so I am going to run it with half a tab for a while to see how it goes, as everything was still perfectly clean the last wash I did. I only run it full, the economy cycle, on economy 7 at night.Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0
