I have just done this on mine, You will only be asked for the unlock code if you put another networks SIM in the mifi. The Virgin SIM uses the T Mobile network so is not seen as unauthorised.
I used an expired Greek Vodafone PAYG SIM.

If you can't borrow a Vodafone or o2 SIM order a free PAYG one, it wont need to be topped up to make the unlock page come up.

A Giffgaff one would do as they operate on o2.
