I don't think that will be the only reason if a reason at all.
I was recently accepted for a Clarity card.
I have an Halifax Easycash account for the same reasons as you. I also have 3 Reward accounts that have an average balance of around £1 each but are funded with £1k for a few minutes each month solely to obtain the £5 rewards. I also have (unused) credit limits of at least 1.5 times my annual income available on other credit cards. My main account is with Nationwide and does not show on credit reports as it was opened in 1988.

Why would you want a Visa Electron? What are the unique benefits of having one? (apart from it not being contactless!)

At the time budget airlines charged no fee if an electron card was used. That is no longer the case.

Have you tried the pre-eligibility checker for the Halifax Clarity card on MSE or on sites like TotallyMoney or Moneysupermarket?

Just tried the eligibility checker. It gives 90% chance.
    So accurate in my case.
  • Why would it? It's just a credit search, which does not say whether you were accepted or rejected.

Surely though any company looking at a credit file in regard to a credit application can put two and two together and ascertain whether an application was accepted or rejected by seeing if the account appears on a credit file.

Not necessarily. Some lenders don't report to the credit reference agencies. The only report anything if there is anything negative.

Almost a waste of time, 90% for me also, although it could be considered accurate in my case as well.

There is a Guardian article linking the rejection of an application to the ownership of an Easycash account, but I'm not permitted to post a link to it.

Interesting but obviously not true in every case. I have the easycash account for the same reason as the reporter. I was accepted online for the Clarity card with a decent credit limit.
I do have other current accounts with Halifax but they are there to obtain the reward payments.Maybe the fact that Halifax see around £36k throughput each year, even though its only there for a few minutes a month makes a difference.
