    Hi all,

I am quite good (if I say so myself) at keeping our grocery bill down, but wondered if you could tell me the cheapest meal you cook?

I thought it might help to inspire me to try new things (My Husband is quite fussy as is my Daughter :( so I am often restricted in what I can cook).

I would say one of my cheapest is home-made bacon quiches:

    Ingredients:

    Flour - 4p
    Marg - 11p
    1 egg (From farm stall) - 7p
    1 brown onion - 10p
1/2 pack Tesco value cooking bacon - 37p
    Grating of cheese - 30p

    Total - 99p.

This makes enough bacon pies for my Husband, myself and our 2 children (aged 1 and 3).

I usually team with mashed potato (estimated cost 40p) and veg (estimated cost £1) or beans (cost 48p).

I would love to hear your lowest cost recipe(s) and hope it will give me some ideas! :T

    Thanks.

Really depends what I buy at what price, looking for bargains I can cook a good meal for about 75p each adult including all accompaniments.
So one eye is always open for really good offers and things to throw in the freezer, often the made dish could make another meal for one or two people.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

A packet soup 30p with loads of leftover veg in -free ( I save one piece of veg from each meal for a nice leftovers collection!) with homemade bread - pennies . Whatever flavour soup you like . I would guess less than a pound for 4people.

Will try some of these ideas. Thanks

Thanks for your suggestions guys, definitely a few there I am going to try.

I have a breadmaker and make my own bread and have been thinking of trying pizza dough in there so I may just bite the bullet and give it a go!

Was very pleased with myself this evening as I had done a turkey casserole with whoopsied turkey and managed to sneak in some courgette, apple and tomatoes to my Hubby and Daughter without them realising on top of the normal veg! My Son will eat pretty much anything and I am similar so its the fussy eaters that prevent us from a bowl of tinned tomato pasta!! x

I make pizza dough in the BM at least once a week, using oil instead of butter, Tesco passata is only 37p (I think) and i only use roughly a quarter of a tetra pack, and I don't use a huge amount of cheese, just enough to keep the kids happy! Other toppings of course are up to you, mine like bacon or tinned mackerel/tuna. :)

Dal. Can't get much cheaper than some lentils, an onion, any leftover veg that needs using up and some spices, especially if you've got Asian shops nearby.

    Edit: forgot to add costings
    Dahl: 15p per person
    Onion: 10p per person
    Leftovers: free
Spices: guessing around 5p per person assuming

    Total: 30p
    Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
    House buying: Finished!
Next task: Lots and lots of DIY
