My OH is diabetic and he doesn't always have something to eat in the evening. It would be best if your OH tested his sugar before going to bed, if it's a bit low something like a glass of milk with a biscuit is normally enough. If his blood levels are okay he doesn't need to eat anything.

Twinks hobnobs are very good to have if blood sugars are a bit low:

If you think about it patients in hospital have their evening meal at about 5-5.30pm and then nothing more until breakfast between 7-8am and that includes diabetics. When my OH has been in hospital he normally tests his blood about 10pm and if it's been a bit low the nurses have given him a slice of toast or milk & biscuit.

  • Hi Floyd, i like these ideas. I'm not a great cook and just have rubbish ready meals but want to lose some weight so i'm going to try these for quick after-work meals!!!
  • beadle2,it might be a good idea to ask advice from your husbands diabetic liason nurse or dietician, the hospital i work in provides a sandwich for diabetics to have around 9pm before settling down for the night,(evening meal is around 4.30/5pm)but diabetic diets have to be tailored to the patients personal needs and this is where the dietician and diabetic nurse can provide the best advice.

I dont want to derail this thread - but, are you serious? EVENING meal is 4.30 -5.00 pm? thats afternoon tea! what on earth do the non-diabetic patients do between supper and breakfast? even if breakfast is at 6.30 that is still 14 hours without proper sustenance!
    (still shaking head in disbelief)

Hey,im only a nurse in the hospital..i dont run the kitchens:rotfl:,
seriously tho,you will find this is common practice in hospital..in England and Scotland...after dinner there is tea and biscuits given out just before evening visiting at 7pm,but thats it,we have small pantries in the wards where the staff can make patients tea, coffee, bread, butter n jam(and illegal toast...we're not actualy allowed toasters on the wards but we all have them)
    PS,Breakfast is at 8am.

  • Morning Beadle, I don't think you've answered whether your OH is type 1 or type 2 and how his medication is dealt with?

What strikes me is that you say your days revolve around food but then he isn't keen on eating before bed, it sounds to me that there's a bit of rebelling going on and he's using "don't want to eat" as a way to hurt you because he knows you worry.

If that's the case, I think you might want to just rewind a bit and try to work out what's behind it all. My Dad is type 2 and takes tablets for his diabetes, he's 76 and we have huge problems with him, his diet and his medication because 10+ years after diagnosis he still doesn't really believe he's diabetic! Dad's behaviour is driven by what's inside his head and I doubt your OH is any different. I have a nasty feeling that you won't ever find acceptable suppers until you've worked out what his issues are about all of this.

I'd second the dietitian/diabetes clinic suggestions. The standard advice would be a diet that is low fat, low sugar, high fruit and veg but you really need to understand how that impacts on his diabetes before you make changes. I suspect that their are forums and support groups for diabetics that contain a huge amount of info about diet.

    Good luck!

  • Tried poached egg on toast with 1 thin slice of ham for tea last night and that was really yummy. I've changed white bread to granary and it actually tastes better, i didn't think i liked it!!! Next is choosing the diet plan, i'm really going for it this time as i have a deadline to shed some weight.
  • Started on the celeb slim meal replacements but I still want to do healthy meals in the evening. I made grilled chicken with couscous last night and it was delish. I've never done couscous before, didn't know it was so easy!!!! Feeling good today and i even had some left over to take into work. Just off now.

Glad I live in Wales then! on my sons most recent visit to hospital (he is a 'frequent flyer') supper was served at 6.30 as always.
Drinks and biccies (and sometimes sandwiches if the nurses can scrounge them up) are taken around about 9.00. Breakfast is at 7.30 (but those in the know usually go to the day room at 7.00 where the ward staff will have left cereal and milk).

cooking mama - thanks for your good-humoured reply! I wasnt having a go at YOU, its more aimed at the management who decide that patients should have supper at the ungodly hour of 4.30pm! HOW MANY OF THEM WOULD EAT SUPPER THEN! my guess is that its to reduce costs by cutting kitchen staff.

grrrr - I do have more to say about this so will start a thread down on moneysavers arms! anyone interested please come down and post.
