Corned beef hash
Tin of corned beef in Netto 89p
2.5g bag of white potatoes 50p Netto
Two carrots and one onion 20p (less than half of the 50p stew bag) Netto
Gravy granules 5p
Squirt of brown sauce 5p
Total £1.69
Peel and chop potatoes into biggish cubes and boil in salted water (only enough to cover so it's not too sloppy) with the chopped carrots and diced onion until soft.
Chill the corned beef (it's easier to chop) and then chop into pieces and stir through until it melts into the potatoes.
Gravy granules to thicken, salt and pepper to taste and a squirt of brown sauce mixed in.
Will easily feed four and should have some left for another meal i.e. lunch or frozen for a quick meal.
I never used to freeze bits of food but I do know as there are nights when we are doing different things and then we use these up or they come in when my son gets in from college.
Chilli-con-carne
400 g extra lean minced beef £1.50 Netto
Two carrots and one onion 20p from rest of stew bag
Two handfuls of red lentils 5p
Stick of celery 10p
Green pepper 30p
Red beans soaked 10p
Tinned tomatoes 22p
Squirt tomatoe puree 10p
Chilli sauce or poweer 5p
Garlic clove 5p
Rice 50p
Brown the mince in a pan, add the diced carrots, onion, celery and green pepper and salt and pepper. Cook until soft. Add tomatoes and beans and tomatoe puree and spices and simmer for 30 minutes.
Serve with steamed rice.
This is over £2.00 but uses good quality mince and should serve 5-6. If you used cheaper mince it would be cheaper but I wouldn't to save a little amount.GC Jan £318/£350, Feb £221.84/£300, Mar £200.00/£250 Apr £201.05/£200 May £199.61/£200 June £17.25/£200

Hi There
Baked potato and cheesy beans is good
As is big bowls of soup with crusty bread
We also like pie - which can be made with left over roast meat, a few onions chopped finely and mushrooms if you like
Otherwise - what about cheap cuts like mince - streeched out with lentils and carrot - made into spaghetti bolognaise, lasagne or chilli
Take a look at Weezl's 50p challenge - its in the mega index
Other cheap cuts include Oxtail, Turkey legs, braising steak
We buy sacks of spuds, and onions from our farm shop - grow our own veg so that there is plenty in the freezer for winter, stock up on Aldi big 6 - reduced fruit and veg, or keep an eye out in morrisons - recently fruit and veg for 30p per bag
IN the spring-autumn we forage - i still have stewed fruit in the freezer for HM puds
Best of luck - start slowly and make slow but important changes. Sooner or later you will get within the budget you set. Join us on the grocery challenge too - my spend used to be over £200 pm for food - i am now in at just under £160 and planning to drop it even lower.
Welcome

Hi everyone, due to an error on my part we have a lot less money left this month (I counted weeks wrong for my payday and I thought I was getting paid today and it's not until next week!)
We now have around £20 to last until next Tuesday and I need to feed my family until then! My family consists of myself, husband and two boys aged 2 years and nearly 7 months. I have enough formula to last until another couple of weeks so it's just a case of actual food.
In my freezer I have a packet of mince, a few chicken breasts and 4 sausages. I have potatoes, a few carrots and 6 eggs. Also have a loaf of bread, block of cheese, spaghetti and about a pint of milk. I know I'm going to need to buy some more food but want to be as economic as I can. I can cook quite well so not afraid of making things from scratch (can't infact remember the last time I bought a jar of sauce!). I also have a basically stocked baking cupboard with things like flour, caster suger, raisans etc.
I feel so stupid that this has happened and in truth we really shouldn't be in this situation as we have more than enough money once our bills are all paid but we always seem to run short at the end of the month. Me and DH are sitting down this evening to sort all this out as it can't go on like this and we need to work out where our money is going.
Anyway, can anyone help me with cheap meal ideas that are still going to fill us up and not compromise too much on nutrition? Any help much appreciated!Proud wife to a soldier and mummy to two gorgeous boysDealing with our Debt Barclaycard £2022.98 RBS £1249.86 Next £183.03September Groceries £120/£102.05:( September Packed Lunches 22/6Sealed Pot Challenge #9940 -

There are many on here who can do fabulous things with your list of food - I'm not one of them I'm afraid - but I'm sure many threads listed will be of great help. The one thing I would say is really cheap and added to the variety of things you've got would be tinned tomatoes that can turn your mince, sausages etc. into a wealth of casseroles, pasta sauces etc. As you've got a good baking cupboard, you could down size your main course portions and and serve a pudding/cake etc. as filler-uppers to get you through.0

I made a spanish omelette last night, that used 6 eggs & 5-6 med sized potatoes & one onion, was fairly easy to do & fed me & hubby last night, plus our DD's are having some at school & there is still 1/3 left over0

Hi all, I am sure this is in numerous places but I can not find the threads so can anyone please direct me...
I am a single mum with 2 girls, I spend sooo much money on food and drink in a week and am sure I can make a huge dent in my credit card debt if I can get my food budget under control but I just can not seem to get things organised and sorted. I have good intentions and fill the fridge but then it all seems to be gone within 3 - 4 days or the trip to the supermarket for bread and milk ends in yet another £50 spend.
My mum says I spend too much on fresh fruit cos I buy loads but my goodness, surely there cant be an overspend on fruit???
ARGHHHH and after I cook for my girls all I eat is weetabix cos everything comes in 2s or 4s.
And now...I am feeling tearful lol what a nutter!
Anyway, thanks for any help and guidance

do you meal plan??? or bulk cook?
This would defo be the key to both cutting down your food spends and making sure you feed everyone (including you!!!) a proper meal.
There will be lots of more experienced people along in a minute to offer more practical advise
Good luck xxx0
