Ok start with baby steps - rather than totally change your eating habits slowly change your shopping habits - you can probs eat the kinds of thing you like but cheaper with a bit if planning and rubberising (making things stretch)

So if things are sold in 2 - make 2 do for all of you - or buy 4 and freeze one, then when you've done that 3 times you'll have enough for another meal for you all!

Fresh fruit is fab but remember dried, tinned and frozen all count for 5 a day and can be much cheaper, as are veg! My kids would happily eat a raw carrot as an apple or a handful of peas as a bunch of grapes. Markets if you have one a fantastic for great value fruit and veg

Tell us what you've made the last few days and we might be able to suggest cheaper similar meals or alternative ways of doing things to start you on your way

Hi - what sort of things do you buy in 2's or 4's? I ask because there are 3 of us (before our 2 older 'children' disappeared off & got married etc there were 5) so I got used to dividing things in odd numbers!
Obviously if you make or buy pizzas you can cut them in 3, or for example you could make 2 large chicken breasts serve 3 if you cut them into chunks & cook in a sauce or even a can of chopped tomatoes.
And cooking a whole chicken (search for 'rubber chicken') will serve as many people as you like! Or 3 for several days!

One thing our crew loved was cheese & potato pie - cook & mash potatoes, mix in some grated cheese, then put in an ovenproof bowl layered with baked beans and/or chopped onion and/or chopped corned beef etc (say bottom layer potato, then beans, then layer of potato, then sliced tomato or chopped onion, finally a layer of potato with some more cheese grated on top - put in the oven for about half hour to heat right through (the potato will already be hot, so doesn't take long to heat). Very filling, and yummy! . . . and cheap!

cml - please, please make sure you eat properly too! Part of helping your children eat healthily is showing them an example - letting them see you doing it too!

And as rachbc says, tinned & frozen fruit as well as vegetables are just as good as fresh fruit. And do your girls do what my lovely granddaughters do, and ask for a piece of fruit, then eat half & leave the rest? If they do, why not give them half a piece of fruit each, perhaps chopped & put in a 'special' little plate or bowl. They still get the same amount of fruit to eat, but you still have another whole piece left for another time!

ARGHHHH and after I cook for my girls all I eat is weetabix cos everything comes in 2s or 4s.

And now...I am feeling tearful lol what a nutter!

Anyway, thanks for any help and guidance

    cx

Big((((((hugs)))))))) hun sounds like you could really do with them right now. Have been were you are eating cereal or going without to make sure the kids have enough to eat.

I would recommend you join the grocery challenge it really has helped me cut down on my spending.

Do an inventory of your cupboards and freezer and look at what you actually have in there it might be that you actually have lots but just cant think of a meal to make with it because it would seem an odd mix but kids love odd and unusual things and its food!!

Do you do your own baking cakes, biscuits etc the children would enjoy helping you with this.

Don't get upset you have found help and plenty of people here will have some great advice.

Hi there. Looking for inspiration! lol and other peoples ideas of what they make when pennys are tight or to use up stuff loitering about the fridge or larder etc. Im not expecting jamie oliver type reciepes lol, i often cheat and do things an easier way - which I love. quick cheap receipes are just what we all need when we get in from work

Well to get the ball rolling my favorite money saving meal is risotto, its more of a cheats risotto, i fry whatever i have lying about the fridge, onions mushrooms, potatoe cubed, corguette, pepper, anything like that, a splash of soy sauce, and then add a packet of flavoured savory rice with water and simmer..it is different every time and always delish!

I look forward to sharing ideas with other people who may be interested xx
