Chopped cabbage or some spring onions, perhaps even some potatoes although it would take longer to cook but still nice :)

Greens are rich in folic acid so good for the baba :)

  • If you or your OH have a day off and feel up to it could you spend a few hours batch cooking? That way you'll have a stash of HM 'ready meals' for when you are too tired to cook. (might come in handy when the little one arrives too!)

Other easy things could be jacket potatoes, pasta and simple sauce, eggs/beans/similar on toast, stirfry,

Or could you have your 'main meal' whilst at work for lunch and just have a sandwich for tea?

Some great ideas there guys many thanks-last nights tea was steak with mange tout and new pots, so although v quick not v frugal as the steak cost over £6 for two. I think i'll go with more pasta & stirfrys and see how i go.

Batch cooking could also be a another idea many thanks.
  • Worked out that last month we spend £538 on food alone - not alcohol or takeaways. Two adults and two children.

I've had a quick look for some cheap recipes but cant seem to find them.

We like pasta, not really into risotto type things, and we like meat.

What can I feed my family on a budget?

    Thanks
  • One of our cheap family favourites is:-

Sainsburys Basics smoked salmon (88p) mixed into cooked pasta along with a tub of creme fraiche, zest of a lemon and black pepper, also sometimes add some rocket if it is growing in the garden at the time, really filling, quick to make and healthy.
  • That sounds great - will try this next week.

    Thanks, any more?
  • Home made pizza is really easy, or try making your own curries and chinese easier than you might think .

  • Tuna macaroni cheese? - white sauce (flour, milk, little bit of butter or margarine for the base) with grated cheese, little mustard and tin of tuna stirred in, mix with 1/2 pack pasta shapes, pre-cooked, tip into a dish with a bit more grated cheese on top and bake for half an hour. Cheap and filling!

Bean bake? fry an onion, mix in a tin of chopped tomatoes and a tin of pre-cooked beans - haricot, borlotti or something - plus some finely chopped streaky bacon if you like (adds flavour); tip in a dish with grated cheese on top and cook in a low oven (slow cooker?) for a couple of hours. Eat with rice or bread.

Bake potatoes in the oven until soft, scrape out insides and mix with grated cheese, chopped up grilled bacon and a little butter, put back in skins and heat up for 20 minutes. Or do the same thing with chopped apple and fried onion instead of bacon (keep the cheese).

    Hope these help.

Hi ianbrown - I was you 3 months ago, regularly spending 5 - 600 per month for a family of 4.

Now we're down to £150 all in for all groceries / cleaning stuff and pets - and we've never eaten healthier!! Plus we both work full-time, so the meals are ready to cook type stuff that we're making, and then heating.

Try the grocery challenge thread (I'm rubbish with adding links, but if you search it will come up) and check out some of the 'makes'.

My best so far is 4 healthy meals for 4 for £1!!!! You'll be amazed!

    Good luck!
