You should be able to pick up a drive for under £50. Linux Mint is free, I don't know the price of Win 8 but knowing Microsoft it'll be expensive. I should ask your daughter and grandson if they mind Linux Mint going on. At least it'll get you just about everything you have now.

You shouldn't have to buy Windows 8 as you've already bought it once.

The Toshiba Recovery Media will be cheaper and would put the PC back to the way it was when new... once you've sorted the hard disk problem.

There may be other ways to read data off the disk - for instance the Toshiba Recovery Media (or a Windows 8 Recovery Drive) might be able to repair it.

If I were you, I'd try Toshiba Support first, assuming the laptop is reasonably new.

On the other thread the lady said she spoke to Toshiba and could get an extended warranty for two years at £100 but would have to send the lappy back to Toshiba. I would have thought that Toshiba could supply the disks even charging for them. Might be worth a punt to see if they'll bend.

Another is to turn off, then turn back on and tap the F12 key a few times during boot up. There should appear a list with possibly the repair option at the bottom.
If we're playing around with the CSM, look into the second (I think) page of the BIOS and see if "Secure Boot" is enabled. If it is click on it and set it to "Disabled then F10 and see what happens.
Desperation stakes now I'm afraid, lol.
We'll probably end up having to replace the HDD and if this is the case another Win8 copy which could be a bit pricey. I don't know what you use the computer for but how would you feel about installing Linux Mint?
