After following instructions on here, We then rang toshiba helpdesk and they went through system with us again to confirm that we needed a new hard drive. Ordered one from Internet £32 and put it in ourselves. Now need windows 8 disc so we can install. Because our laptop was only 14mths old toshiba offered an extended warranty for £100 for two years and if we sent them the laptop they would put in hard drive, install windows and warranty for the next 22 months. This would have been better than taking it to repair man who quoted £100 for repair and installation once but not as good as repair yourself and buy win 8. May be a thought to get the warranty.

Start the computer and press F2. When the settings screen pops up move along to the "Boot" screen and check that there's a HDD showing there. Then press F10 and come out of bios by selecting do NOT save. If there is a HDD showing, make sure it is at the top of the list. The CD/DVD should be below that, as should USB.

will try this out first thanks
i came into the world with nothing, and guess what? i still have it!!!:p

Power up and try to open the CD drawer make sure that there isnt a CD been left in. If it won't open with the button, use a paperclip opened out to put into the hole to make it open.
My 25 year old son said old laptop had died, and this was the fault! Talk about red faced, when 60 yo Mum fixed it :o:D

It does indeed sound like your HDD has gone walkabout. Try this as a last resort. Switch off computer. Leave for 2 minutes. Hold down 0 (zero) key, keep it held down and and tap power key. What I'm hoping for is below the list will be a "Repair" option which you should select and then follow onscreen instructions. If it doesn't work it looks a new hard drive I'm afraid.
