Or measure performance by output not input. Staff are generally more productive if they have more control over their working conditions. If she's doing what's required then who cares if she sends a few texts during the day?
So should her pay be cut if she fails to complete whats required?

What if your member of staff is texting his dealer to see if he can get hold of some crack cocaine in time for the weekend?

    What if he is?

Thanks folks. The thing is, she is texting non-stop. She's nearly driven my colleague to distraction but from tomorrow I am supervising her. She will be working in a different part of the building (directors' side) and I'm going to tell her that she can't unless it's lunchtime. She isn't a child, she's probably late 30's - my thoughts are that if it was an emergency then there would be a phonecall not a text...

We won't be extending her contract....

Edit - the agency has also told her! Made no difference.

If she, or any other member of staff, is not performing their duties adequately then that would need to be dealt with

That would depend on the nature of her contract.

However if she's paid by the hour and is capable of being more productive the answer is to give her more work, not tell her to stop texting and stare into space instead!

If she's not performing then tell the agency to send someone else.

If it's just that her texting is annoying you, stop watching what she's doing all day and think about something else.

I was just wondering why you used a sick child as an example.

Normally I would agree with the not micromanaging, but this is incessant. She has split from her husband due to (we think) an affair which is continuing. We think it's him she is texting (silly grins, big sighs, you get the picture). The rest of us probably get one, maybe 2 texts a week - this is a dozen or more every hour!!

Hopefully the change of scenery will make her see what is acceptable..

Just a current example of an issue that one of my team is having right now. Another one is someone buying her first flat- i don't mind the odd call to her solicitor because if she doesn't she spends all day on the verge of a nervous breakdown and that's not productive.
