Quick question for all please -
Does your employer permit texting and use of personal mobiles during work hours?
We have a temp with us at the moment who cannot understand why it's frowned on at work.... I'd just like to see if it's only my place of work!

Change the temp.
Set policy in place before you get the next one.

Or measure performance by output not input. Staff are generally more productive if they have more control over their working conditions. If she's doing what's required then who cares if she sends a few texts during the day?0

No. Only allowed to have them out in the canteen. You can be disciplined for having them in our work areas. Visitors have to surrender them at the front door.I am Doll Parts

People get paid to work not to send texts
That's one way to look at it. Another way would be that if you allow staff some control over the way they work they will be much more productive than if you micromanage them. My experience is that the second approach generally gets the best results in an office environment.0 -

This person is a temp so has no control over they way they work the company and agency should tell them what to do.We’ve had to remove your signature. Please check the Forum Rules if you’re unsure why it’s been removed and, if still unsure, email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
What about being part of the team and helping others if the person thinks they have enough time to sit there and text. Just like staff who think they can go on the net in work time as well, it creates bad feeling.

Just because someone is on a temp contract doesn't mean they necessarily need to be managed differently to a permanent member of staff.
There are plenty of good reasons not to micromanage staff on issues like this. I'd much rather a member of my team spent five minutes texting her partner to check up on a sick child than spend all day worrying and making mistakes in her work, for example.0 -

What if your member of staff is texting his dealer to see if he can get hold of some crack cocaine in time for the weekend?Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0
