girlatplay - list coming along nicely! Also have bump on head from a hairstyling appliance (see updated list). Is this ironic? Not sure. Don't think I could actually explain the concept of irony. I pretend I get it but....haven't quite got the handle on it. Will ask Alanis Morrissette. Oh hang on...isn't the irony being that she didn't understand it either, as demonstrated in her song 'Ironic?' SHUT UP SKINTY.
Right! Moving on, girlatplay you sound like you know what you want to do so yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay let's do it!
From a personal point of view, remember I was until very recently a teacher at a college for 16+ learners and I taught LOADS of people who were 30+, 40+, 50+ and yes 60+ too. Every one of them was nervous about returning to learning, unsure whether it was 'for them', would they manage their time well, how would they juggle childcare, work etc....I'd say 2/3 at least were lone parents too.
From my point of view (and my fellow teachers of all manner of subjects) our first priority is the welfare of our learners. So we took extra care of learners who were coming back to college after a gap and really tried to practically help them and reassure them whenever we could.
I'm sure the teachers/tutors/lecturers on your chosen course will be same! So why not just arrange a little appointment and go for a chat? You can of course always chat with any of us in here, PM me or anyone who has gone back into study. I wear both hats - Im doing an MA at 38 and have taught people who have gone back to learning at 58 years of age - the last time they were in a classroom they were 15.
Oh...and as for the 'enough about me' comment, missy....may I refer you to post no.306 in this diary!! I thank you (and mean it xx)
Right. Back to reading up on construct validity and ethics.
Yes. I know.

I don't know that it is ironic as such, perhaps the combination of head and hairstyling appliance, but the bump is just unlucky (and painful, I would imagine). I did, however, make a muffled kind of snorting noise as I read the paragraph (at work, as per). Alanis Morrissette DID get the irony, hence the reason for her song. I'm sure if you asked her, she would explain. Although as she explains she may have one hand in her pocket and the other... !!!!!! SHUT UP GAP!!! Sorry, I am so incredibly bored today.
I think my concern is that last time I called a college to ask about this type of course, about 6 months ago, I got passed about from one place to another. No one knew what they were doing or who was supposed to be dealing with what I was asking about. Actually, I have just remembered that I think I saw an enquiry email address on the website. I think I will email so that I can put some basic questions down, without being interrupted, in the hope that the right person will get back to me. Worth a try I guess. Thank you for your thoughts and encouragement.
Just a thought about your list, could you not tick off the first Uni work on the list. It is listed like that is a morning task. Morning is over and you did it. Check! Afternoon stuff is ongoing.Mortgage at 12/07/2022 = £175,000

Hi skinty, no, me and oldest sister don't get on. She still goes through life with a superior air and believes she has the right to tell the rest of us what to do. She will post copies of job ads that pay a third of what I earn thru my letterbox as she thinks they'd be perfect for me. Irritating or what!
Gap, treat your desired course as you would if it was something little miss gap wanted or needed. Evening Divas xxxxxxxxx
Am tired, how about you? Braindead now so enough work for one day! Not finished what I wanted to finish but to be honest I've only just got my head around what I'm supposed to do.
My tutor had given me some suggestions & different sources to look at. I thought one was a female musician I like who is a bit different to the usual pop starlets around. I looked her up.....turns out it was a mega academic feminist writer, famous for subverting many of Freud's theories.
hahahahahaaaaaaaaaa!! Shows what I know!!!
But tomorrow is another day!
INOD - oh god, I have a family member rather like your sister. Distance has proved the best thing to keep our relationship civil!!
Families, eh Divas??? They bring out the best and absolute worst in us.
Right. Early night I think. Want to get down the shops early to get the messages in (got to get those messages, innit girlatplay!!). Mum and dad back tomorrow....!
Night all xxxxxxxxxx
Sits up in bed, light back on..........anyone else in here call doing the shopping 'going for the messages'?! xxxxxxxxxxx2014 Frugal Living Challenge

Hey skinty - 'messages' hey; very Irish
btw I'm sure I should know, but what are you studying again (feel free to shoot me for lazyness, rubbish memory etc....Ah, construct validity, shudder, I remember it well. Probably not as well as I should tho, lol).
GAP - a girl on my doctorate was 53 when we started; she is currently working in a really good job (there is actually a negative story attached to it too, but that's the positive bit). I believe 4/24 of the course were 40+ too...
INoD; sorry about your sister. I know where I'd want to shove those job descriptions......
Hope all are well xDebt remaining:

girlatplay wrote: »Thank you all who replied to me. I have been looking around for some time at the different courses that are available and suitable for me. The one that seems to tick all the boxes both educationally and personally is the Accounting MA at one of the local uni's. The next step really is to contact them.
I don't know if we have an Access to Higher Education here. We do (in my line of studying) have a type of access course to get to where I want to be but that means doing everything in stages. I have thought about that but it would probably take even longer to get to the finish line. Because I have the SLA qualification, I might not need to go back that far. I am taking what mothernerd and giblet have said into consideration in this instance.
I just feel a bit stupid being my age and not knowing the first thing about uni. With reference to the age point, I have been thinking about what you said skinty and, yes, the years will pass regardless. I don't actually do anything else (I have next to no hobbies) so it will while away the time with something useful. Also, one of my colleagues is 55 (I think, maybe 56, I can never remember exactly) but she is very young on her outlook and you wouldn't pick her for her age. She did a law degree (4 years) and finished it about 2 years ago. I think she did it part time. In fact, I am going to ask her about it once I have finished on here.
Anyway, thanks again everyone. Enough about me, back to you skinty. It must be nearly time for you to tick off 3 more things on your list!?!
I was 40 the week I started my MBA and there are quite a few people I am on the course with who have not been to uni before. If you do a part time course it tends to be with more 'mature' (ahem) individuals. Yes you will get some smart ar%"s but mostly they are good guys who are in the same boat as you.
Start looking into it and there is a thing called career development loans that does pay some of the fees and you start to pay it back after you are finished.
