Cheery's buttling diary: tea in one hand, plant pot in the other, running shoes on

Wow! Coal dust and horse hair! I'm sorry I missed that, I wandered off into the garden I think
I've definitely heard of horsehair being used with laths - its probably 19th century, that plaster!
HM bread is gooda meeting to go to, so you can stop at a civilised hour, is brilliant
I really hope you don't get mistaken for a chimney sweep
Have some tea and cake in the meantime :coffee::bdaycake:2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Thanks KC. Tis indeed 19th century (just) - the house was built in 1890 and it's the original plaster. Very impressed it's lasted this long - not sure my own plastering will! :rotfl: It was VERY crumbly though - once I'd broken into it I basically just pulled the entire lot off with my bare hands (which are now calloused and sore and scaly like a crocodile...
)
Interesting to see the back of the wall behind it though - it's an internal wall through to the spare bedroom, so that side is staying up - that's the original plaster too and you can see where they've hooked it through the wooden laths - just like we were taught on our plastering courseBasically now my entire landing looks like this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lath_and_plaster
quite interesting actually :rotfl:
Ignoring the fact that the ceiling is also the original plaster, and in some places is basically being held up by the paint  :rotfl: I've repaired a big hole but I'm NOT taking the ceiling down - that's going to get a VERY gentle coat of new 'cover the cracks' paint and I'm hoping nobody looks up:rotfl:
Right - off to work at a cheerful pal's house today :j very excited - this is the woman I used to share an office with at old job so I miss working with herHope we actually get something done rather than just nattering all day! :rotfl: Have a good one folks
Oooh - tis, oh, I was going to say it's payday, but actually now payday is the 18th, so it's not :rotfl: BUt it's the start of a new month tomorrow so that's exciting:rotfl:

Amazing stuff, Cheery - thats quite interesting in the Stephen Fry sense of the phrase! And I'll bet you're right, taking the whole ceiling down would be a different matter altogether.
The first house I bought had walls made of "clunch" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clunch and that wiki entry is much more complimentary than a builder I spoke to after I bought it, who described it as "any old rubbish that was around at the time"
Have a lovely day with your pal2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Ooh, not heard of Clunch before! Looks, er, interesting... :rotfl:
I did have a lovely day thank you :j and we *may* have eaten quite a lot of cake :$ What was that about slimming world again?! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:0 -
Hmm - just back from slimming world - 3lbs ON in the last 2 weeks  which means I've now only lost a grand total of 7.5lbs in the last 5 months
:rotfl:
Still, at least I've not put another stone back onFruit and veg all the way from here - would LOVE my one stone award by the end of March
Long day here and a funeral this morningLovely occasion, and lovely to see everyone, but still very sad. So many lovely things said - I got all maudlin thinking about what I'd want people to say at my funeral, and whether they were likely to given what I was doing with my life, and decided not
More gloominess at home, tiredy tired as full of cold and banished myself to the attic at 3am and didn't get back to sleep til 5, need to finish a lecture but just could NOT concentrate today which means getting to work by half 7 tomorrow morning to finish it off, gah! Could do with a good run in the office tomorrow but got some kind of induction event in town in the afternoon that I could do without!
And.. breathe... so much to be thankful for. Friends and loved ones and online pals too, a roof over my head, good food, no debt, so much to be thankful for.0 -
Phew, what a long week! I know I've still got Friday left at work, and a couple of weekend days :rotfl: but the bulk of the *work* is over now :j Part of me planned to screw the plasterboard to the walls this evening - but I might just wait til I've got another pair of hands rather than trying to hold 6 foot of board and operate a drill at the same time  :rotfl:
Instead I'm going to make some tasty tea (I see Mr Cheery has been shopping, so we have more than cabbage now :j :rotfl: ), do a bit of yoga, then I bought the final wool for my shawl yesterday so need to get winding that into a proper ball - my LEAST favourite job as it's all fluffy, and out of the 7 balls I've done so far, I think at least 5 have ended in a giant tangled mess and lots of cursing!:rotfl:
Hope you're all good0 -
Morning chums
Wool wound properly - rigged up an ingenious device with the handles of a couple of dusters and it was done in no time:j Going to London on Saturday so hopefully I can finish it on the train! :j Or maybe even before then (but that means tonight, I suppose, which probably won't happen :rotfl: )
YNAB done :money: Found part of the £18.80 I couldn't account for the other day  I'd put £5 of it as a bank transaction when actually it was cash. Still no idea what I did with the rest though
Best trot to work. Taking advantage of this being the first day in ages I can be a bit more lazyand it's snowing out there (not settling though) so it looks rather chilly!
Have a good one0 -
Morning all (except it's afternoon now - where do the hours go?!)
Lovely trip to London yesterday with pals from running forum :j :j Not even toooo expensive
£30 trains (through megatrain :j :j No seat reservations, but didn't need them -an early train (6.30am) on the way down, and a 3 hour lots-of-stops train on the way back meant not too busy)
£15 lunch + drinks
£10 brunch
£5 tea and cake at the museum
So £60 on a day out including travel and 2 meals and snacks, not tooooo bad (although not doing it every week, clearly!) :rotfl:
Plastering today. Or at least trying to.... :rotfl: *Obviously* the uprights in the stud wall aren't flush with each other so that means faffing about sticking batons and things to them before I can put the plasterboard on, and Mr Cheery has done his back in so can't help today, and I REALLY want to get on with it, gah!
Still, I got out for a short run this morning :j in the snow  just a little flurry though and the sun's come out a bit now
Two weeks at work, then two weeks off :j :j SO looking forward to it! :j0 -
Evening :hello:
Not much to report. YNAB done, all good :j 11 days to payday :rotfl:
Trying to ease back into Flylady - been ignoring it a bit as the whole place is such a tip with decorating stuff, but it really does make a difference even in this mess. Tonight I've actually done my afternoon/evening routine, including putting the recycling and compost out, and I've got some washing on, and spent 5 mins in the worst room (currently the bedroom - picked up some actual rubbish, dusted various things near the door that were covered in plaster dust despite the dust sheets, and put some clothes away).
Also did today's mission, which was to take everything off and scrub the kitchen counter :j Our counter is tiny, but I did have to move the microwave - and found the chopping knife! :j :j :rotfl: Result - been looking for that for weeks :rotfl
Off to do a bit of work on my diploma which has been studiously ignored since well before Christmas  Feeling in the mood tonight so going to try and do an hour or so at least, then some yoga, and then bed :j0 -
Wow Cheery you have been busy with the house. Well done you for getting on and doing it yourself. We bought a bag of plaster just after christmas to sort out our kitchen wall and it's still sitting on the kitchen counter :eek:Goals for FebruaryDeclutter 2/50Money Made £0/£200Overpayments £0/£2000
