Isnt it sort of like the local 'rugby club'? women do the teas and are on the periphery?

Yes, except the rugby club tend to drink a lot and some are badly behaved in other areas (e.g promiscuous ) while the masons care about charity and looking after the community.

My dh is a mason and says the priority order is family first. I don't see it as any different from him having another hobby I'm not involved in, e.g. 5 aside, golf, etc. He still talks when he gets home, they have the meeting then food and socialising. It's not all secret!

consider this - Freemasonry is rife in royalty down through aristocracy and the middle classes, it is known that many high ranking police officers were Freemasons. Celebs sometimes join. Especially where they share unusual interests. Freemasons PROTECT other freemasons.

Bit what if it is? in 99% of cases it's just a bunch of blokes, doing each other favours, having a pint and raising a bit of cash for charity, the other 1% is possibility something more sinister, to be honest I could describe my experience in the Brownies the same way!

I wouldn't disagree with you on that point.

I think everyone has their own perspective. I have nil interest in the masons. But the op isn't comfortable. This thread is about how she feels. That's the most important thing. I personally don't understand why in 2014 people need to do any kinds of favours for one another but I will say this, giving to charity or doing good deeds should stand on their own merits. I think our society is still very corrupt. My local council is as corrupt as you get, there have been mps campaigning to stop certain practices, brown envelopes etc, people and companies getting backhanders. I have no idea whether that has anything to do with the masons, there's also orange lodges in certain areas as well up here.

If people have influence and power it should be used wisely and I'm not sure it's wise that people from certain professions should be involved in any secret society. A sign on a door and a lily Allen video doesn't tell people anything that goes on inside.

As far as I'm aware, if a policeman is a freemason then they have to declare it.......I know that when I was looking into becoming a magistrate, I was told that if I had been a freemason, then I would have had to declare it.

Personally I can't think of any LAWFUL organisation that I would have to admit being a member of in that sort of circumstance....so it makes a mockery of saying its a secret society when you openly have to declare being a member !

Personally I think its more like a network club but I can think of other organisations where the members 'look after their own' but dont seem to attract the comments that freemasonary does.

What kind of interests do you have in mind?
  • As I said the OP has deleted her post which is a shame really as I think I can relate to how she felt when OH first joined.

But as I say, over time I've learnt that its just men being boys again (think of the blanket camp in the forest that only members of the gang can enter lol) late nights once or twice a month and if I'm feeling charitable a wife-driven taxi home.

Oh and a good excuse to get tarted up like a dogs dinner a few times a year!
