Short Changed In Supermarket

Hi, Im looking for some advise with how best to proceed after being short changed at the local supermarket.

Last night I paid for an item costing £2.07 with £10.10, I received only 3p changed. i informed the cashier that I paid 10.10 however she was adament that I had only paid 2.10. She then took my details and offered to get a call back to me if the till was up the following day.

I then spoke with the manager and asked that the till be checked while I was in the store but was refused this, I was however promised a call back with the till results the following afternoon regardless of whether the till was up or not.

My issues are

1. I have been effectively robbed of £8
2. I have effectively been called a liar by the cashier
3. I have not received the phone call which I was promised.

I work for a building society and know that there is a strict complaints procedure to followed with our complaints but I cant help but feel that with supermarkets and a case like this any complaint will not be taken seriuusly at all and that I will be lucky if I even receive a reply.

How should I now proceed or should I just give it up?

    Doesn't help you now but they should have taken the till off there and then to spot-check it.

    You should definitely pursue it though. Call them back as often as you need to, it should show up in the till.

    My guess is that the till was spot on and the cashier was eight quid better off come the end of the night :(

    Bit late now but most cashiers put the note on the till - that's ON not IN until they've made change. That's if they don't ring the bill amount into the till so that it calculates the change for them.

    In either case it pays to watch that they do one or the other, and do it right.

    A lesson learned the hard way.

    i once got ripped off like this now when i pay with any note i make a mental note of the last three/four numbers on it before i hand it over .
    Never needed it since but still do it for the just in case.

    Happened to me once but they called me back the next day and told me I was right and gave me what they owed me so wouldn't worry yet, if they say you're in the wrong get onto the blower to their head office/customer services
    2p off is still 2p off!

    had no problems in asda they rang an item in twice,rang up when i got home went back next day and got money they didnt even want to check.always check receipts before i leave store now as it has happened quite a few times

    I'll now tell the story of a cshier who WAS on the fiddle...

    Remember the pic n mix counters in Woolies, with the old fashioned 'proper' tills with keys, that had denominations of £ S d? (Similar to the one in Open all Hours)

    This lady used to shortchange customers, but her till was ALWAYS spot on & nobody could work out what was going on.

    THEN... one keeen, eagle eyed Trainee Manager (Guess Who???) notced her collecting the rubber bands from around the plastic bags, the sweets came in. She placed them by the till. Later in the day I noticed some of the bands hanging from the till keys.When she went to lunch/tea breaks the bands were gone & she went for her break carrying a piece of tissue - she always seened to have a runny nose, at breaktime....

    Anyway, we stopped her & found the tissue contained £1 note (was a few years back) & she'd been carefully adding the bands to the keys which were to the same value as she had short changed customers, until she'd made an even amount, to take from the drawer!!

    You couldn't make it up!!

    An ex of mine always use to fold or tear a corner of a note before handing it over so he could say that £10 has a tear or fold etc.

    I have to admit that I rarely use cashback because the few times that I have used it. I have not been given my money and had to ask for it.

    So I will always use cash points now.

    If you do not get any joy, go back to the supermarket when it is busy and complain loudly. They will give you the money to go away, so that you do not upset* the other customers.

    *upset means: Persuade them to shop elsewhere.

    I was once doing some work in the back office of "a leading UK supermarket". While I was there, a supervisor cam to get 50 pounds from petty cash to "calm an irate customer".

    You've got nothing to lose by contacting their head office. At least it will highlight the shop's poor customer care attitude!
