100% agree. If I had a customer complaint about being short changed I'd take the till off there and then so that there could be no doubt that the cashier and/or anyone else could have tampered with it to make it seem to balance.
To be fair, it happens just as often where the customer is wrong as it does the cashier being wrong.... and yes on occasion I have had to be reminded to give a customer their cashback. You have to remember that we all make mistakes and working in retail usually involves working with money constantly so the chances are the mistake will be with your money
I will say though that if they dont call you back, I'd phone their head office and blast them, as that is just not on. They will be very interested, and you might even get some compensation out of them

was it a 10 pound note you gave her? if so how the heck can someone claim you only gave them 2.10p when you clearly gave a note and some change????

regarless of who was right and who was wrong the shop should have called you back as promised. And, until proven otherwise, the customer is always right.
At the very least you should complain again to the store and head office. A letter may be most effective. Keep at it and let us know how you get on.r.mac, you are so wise and wonderful, that post was lovely and so insightful!0 -

This sounds a bit odd. Nobody else seems to have noticed or commented about.
I can understand a "mix-up" between a fiver and a tenner, or a £10 note and a £20 note.
I presume you handed over a £10 note plus 1 x 10p or 2 x 5p (I don't think anything else would fit or make sense)
I presume the cashier says you handed over a £2 coin or 2 x £1 coins with the 2x 5p or 10p (unless it was a handful of change but then this would have "definitely" been "more memorable" since she would have to count it)
I'd have said it was rather "unusual" to make a mistake between a note and some coins.

This happened to a fiend of mine recently in ASDA. He had been given a £20 note to go shopping and had only been given change of a tenner at the till. The checkout woman said to him when he pointed this out "I suppose you know the serial number too".
When he asked for a manager he wanted him to wait till the end of the day and see if the till was over (which it may not have been if the operator nicked a tenner from it - especially as they expected it to be over). My friend refused and demanded the £10 - he needed it for other shopping anyway and was given it.
My Mother had a similar problem with her council tax. I had tried to gt her to pay by direct debit but she insisted on paying by cash - so she had a receipt
When I was in her drawer getting something for her I happened to notice her receipt sitting there for £1.01 paid the day before - I queried this and she said it was £101.00 she paid. It was a complete fluke I noticed this and luckily the council checked the person in question was over by that amount and gave another a receipt for the remainder.
Needless to say she has now set up a DD.0 -
You do have to watch cashback - sometimes the cashier forgets, sometimes they are ripping you off (I have only been sure of this once)
Tearing the notes sounds like a plan - unless everyone does it.
Me? I've given up on cash - chip and pin has made the old CC quicker. You slot in the card yourself, key the number and remove it yourself. Much easier than cash! and its 0% with cashback - result. Trouble is I never have any cash to hand when I need it0 -
Report it to the police as theft and ask them to get hold of the cctv in the place, regardless whether it covers it or not. That will put the wind up the supermarket.
Go in and ask to speak to the duty manager and as said, make a fuss that they have held onto your money for this time.
I have stopped shopping at our local tesco for this reason, and a few others. I went in once and the woman at the till said she had given me my card back. She hadnt. I had watched her put it in her lap and was allowing herself to dig herself deeper before I said loudly 'I saw you put in in your lap, under the till' A few cards fell out. I complained to the manager who didnt want to know.
About a year later my partners card was cloned there by a cashier and numerous times we went in asking what was being done and we were just told 'we're dealing with it' not once did we get an apology.0 -
along with some others - I would stand in the shop loudly demanding my money!!!!!!!
I understand ALOT more than I care to let on

Im gonna move this over to the vent board, as this is what this thread is really about
hope you get your money back by the way.0 -
When handing over notes tell the cashier how much you ar giving them - just say 'theres £20'. Check-out operators can and do make mistakes. I am surprised that the manager did not ask for a check to be done on the till there and then. I have seen a manager holding up a queue because of a complaint so that they can swap out the drawer with a new one and do a check. Good luck .....
IvanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0
