Somewhere there'll be a statistic that tells us how many people have died or been injured that way. I did see a site somewhere that did this. Office of Statistics for some government bit.

Anyway, I stick short knives that don't protrude above the basket in handle first, and longer ones flat in the top tray.

Sensitive or not, there's no way I'd leave sharp knives sticking upwards in the middle of my kitchen floor with a 3 year old running about.

Don't think I would have left the dishwasher open when my kids were three years old!

They hadn't invented dishwashers when my kids were three years old :)

I do think it's a bit paranoid to worry about falling onto your dishwasher and impaling yourself on the knives, but I can't say that I would keep doing it if I had kids.

We got a newer dishwasher (Bosch) and it has a knife tray, so they now go on their sides which is far safer :)

Nah... it's my chair that's old and squeaky!

I must admit, dishwashers had been invented, but only very very posh people had them back in 1970

  • [SIZE=6]Hi my first time on HERE....Tesco have sink tidy baskets in cream on offer for 89pence each..yes 89pence in their basic line these are perfect for putting in dishwasher they are small and have a sloping front so you will never lose those small bits and bobs like bottle tops, you need two to fill the same space as the large ones that come with the machines..good luck! nopace4me

My family gets through domestic appliances like others get through tins of bean. What bugs me is that the cutlery baskets in dishwashers only last a few months before they get holes in the bottom where the plastic mesh wears out, and knives fall though affecting the wash. Does anyone have any ideas for a cheap but more practical replacement ?

Put the knives in handle end first (sharp end upwards) and that will help.
Marky mark no no no never ever put knives of anything sharp in handle down, there have been fatal accidents where people have fallen over and stabbed themselves and died! My dishwasher instructions came with these dangerous instructions. Alway try and put long sharp tools in the top tray sharp side up, so as not to damage the coating on the trays...be safe especially when children help in the kitchen and play around..
