Dishwasher cutlery baskets!

Options
My family gets through domestic appliances like others get through tins of bean. What bugs me is that the cutlery baskets in dishwashers only last a few months before they get holes in the bottom where the plastic mesh wears out, and knives fall though affecting the wash. Does anyone have any ideas for a cheap but more practical replacement ?

They should last more than a few months! try not to drop the knives in - yes I know it's easier said than done - or get a Miele next time with a top cutlery drawer.

Put the knives in handle end first (sharp end upwards) and that will help.

i agree, its the only way to stop them holes appearing! they should last years. just watch you don't slit your wrists as you take them out again!

Mine lasted years too, but one section finally got holed. I just happened to have some plastic around the place that had punched holes in it so I cut a square of that and fitted it in.
Then I made sure I saved the rest!

Maybe you don't need holes in it and could use anything plastc since drainage doesn't really have to be perfect. Or you could could cut one side very slightly too long so it sits in the basket at a slight angle and drains off that way?

I got one of those little wire baskets that has a brush, comb and mirror in it all wrapped up.I gave the brush etc to my daughter and used the basket in the dishwasher.
Ive seen them empty in charity shops before but as soon as I wanted one they were impossible to find so had to buy one new :)
I think I got it in poundstretcher.

    Please no!

A student (if I recall correctly) died after slipping on the kitchen floor when the dishwasher was open. I have never put a knife in this way again after reading this! It happened about a year ago.

A rare accident, true, but one that would not have been fatal, if the knives had been loaded differently.

I'm aware of 2 fatal accidents were thats happened. I never put knives in sharp end upwards either. I always make sure they're lying diagonally across basket, and that I mix different cutlery together. (I think it cleans better that way)

I put sharp knives at the top on a shallow tray, I also heard about the fatal accident and it scared me. I had an old dishwasher with a broken basket and we put some plastic mesh in each compartment.
