Tesco keep lost property

Options
Me and my daughter found some money in our local tesco, and did the honest thing and handed it in. I was told that we could claim the money in 8 weeks if it was unclaimed.
This Saturday was the eighth week and my wife checked if it had been claimed, it hasn't and the customer services person said to her to bring her husband back with the receipt for the lost property I had been given at the time.
I returned and was told actually that it's a 3 month wait to claim lost property.
I have since been phoned by tesco and told that actually I was given the wrong information. I can never claim the money and it has gone to charity. When I asked the person said they had no idea which charity.

What are my rights?

  • Where are you? Different parts of the UK have different laws on lost property.

Rights are probably none as it wasnt yours and you have no contract with Tescos over it. A complaint to Head Office about the misadvise will probably result in a gift voucher for the same value

I would'nt worry about something that was'nt mine in the first place, and good on Tesco if they have sent the money onto a charity.

You would probably have been better to tell Tesco that you have found money but actually take it to the nearest police station, I read a thread recently where they returned money to the finder a month after it was handed in.
  • I live in the south west, i only want the money cause it was a considerable amount and I don't want it going to Tesco's "charity" I would rather decide myself.
Wish I had taken it to the police now....

Perhaps it will be easier to bear if you remember that the money never was yours to decide where it should go and that you're no worse off now than if the owner had claimed it.

Can be disappointing missing out on a stroke of luck, but thats all it ever was. There was always the chance you were never going to see it again, regardless who you gave it to.

The poll is quite misleading (along with the title of this thread). If the question is whether you can claim YOUR lost property.. I would say yes. The actual question is whether or not you can claim the property of somebody else?

I agree completely. The money was never yours in the first place so I wouldn't even dream of trying to claim it.

    Sounds more likely....

Cynicism aside, Tesco probably support a number of different charities which would more than likely explain why they can't tell you which one it went to. Why don't you ask them for a list of charities they support and if there's one or more that you agree with on the list then hope that some of it went their way.
  • Was the op really going to give it charity? Starting a thread like this just seems a little over the top for someone who was just going to give it away again anyway.
  • Christ alive that's a lot of negativity. I'm not keeping it for myself, surely it was my prerogative where it goes, if I found it.
I'm new to this forum, I'm new to forums in general.
I was just disappointed by Tesco's handling of it really. If you found the poll misleading again I'm new to this forum stuff.
