 OMG I can't believe how this thread has turned into a slanging match about couples v's lone parents.

This has turned into a slanging match because op doesn't realise how hard it is for lone parents. We do not have everything handed to us

I was part of a couple once and was better off financially

Entitledto also told me I was entited to housing and council tax benefit - I am not

You get free milk tokens when your children are a certain age - mine are older

You get free eye test - I still have to pay for glasses I only get so much off for them

    £930 per month - I wish

    You haven't a clue

It's because you work too much! Cut down to your personal allowance £5220 and then you'll get the benefits and have plenty to live on.

And don't give me sanctimonious lecture on how you enjoy working and don't want to be a part-timer. I hate martyrs.

Well you are all obviously crazy and making your lives unnecaserily (sp?) hard, as I have just been told by entitledto.com that if I was a single parent on my £5k earnings, with my two boys I would get:

£13k tax credits (presume £102.40 of this to cover 80% of £128/week childcare)
£340.74 of the £350 monthly rent paid
£114.42 of the £120 pcm council tax paid
    My £5000 I earn

So in short I have annual childcare cost to me of £6656, compared to tax credits total of 13k, leaving £6344
My £5000 income I keep all of as below threshold £5000
I need to find £14.84 per month to top up rent/council tax £180ish/year

    6344+5000-180=£11164/12 = £930.33
So I have cash income of £930!!! Per Month!

And I get my course fees paid, free milk, veg& baby milk tokens, free dentist&opticians, plus I'm sure there's other stuff if you look really hard.

£930 per month is untold riches!

I'd say to any 'struggling' single parents you are clearly doing something wrong if you're not benefiting like this.

    :rotfl:

OP do you believe everything you read? You are just so amazingly IGNORANT!!! The entitledto calculator IS NOT accurate for one thing it is an ESTIMATE. You WOULD NOT get to keep your £5k earnings you absolute FOOL because that rule is for TAX PURPOSES not for BENEFIT ENTITLEMENT. My god have you been taking stupid pills? Well, you were pregnant at 18/19 and expect to have your whole life sorted by 22 so what should I expect? I already gave you a breakdown of my income as it actually is not as some online calculator says it should be. My god I shall find it hard to resist if you post on here in six months time saying your husband has run off with the local barmaid.

A single person requires £11,500 a year to live on according to the government. Two people (two adults or one plus one child) require £15,400 per year to live on. This is what any benefit entitlements top a person or couple's income up to - NO MORE EXCEPT IN THE FIRST YEAR CERTAIN PEOPLE RETURN TO WORK. Add any additional persons in the form of children and you get additional monies each week or month in the form of child benefit and child tax credits and again, this in compliance with the minimum the government says you need to live on.

YOU OP, ARE NOT LIVING ANYWHERE NEAR THE POVERTY LINE!!!

The £20k+ figures the entitledto calculator gives includes childcare costs which contra themselves straight back out because there is only one adult in my family able to work and therefore no-one is able to stay at home long-term.

Budget better OP like the rest of us have to. If you had restrained yourself from dragging lone parents into it by making uneducated comparisons you wouldn't have received this reaction. And TheWaltons I am equally disgusted at a lot of your comments. Sorry I couldn't "keep" my husband; hope you're suitably ashamed of that nasty comment. It might not have been aimed at anyone in particular but then isn't the problem with making sweeping statements?

It's a statement of affairs, your obviously spending beyond your means if you can't manage on £25k. So if you post all your incomings and outgoings we may be able to help and tell you what you can save on and get the best value with.. We've all done one on here before and it's amazing what you can save by having other people comb through your finances. I now have my weekly shop down to £60 for 5 thanks to the money saving ole style board and will be debt free by xmas thanks to this site. There is no need to suffer with all the good people on board.

It turned into a slanging match as you are all blantantly not reading my original posts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I said applying the same system of tax the individual income/ assess the household for benefits is unfair.

I also said a system that applies the same principles two lone parent families as two-parent households would not work to it's optimum efficiency for both demographics.

I have posted figures of how much benefit I would be given if I dispensed wit hthe niceties of Husband and became a single parent. The bottom line is I would have more money to live on than with us both here and both working!

I am NOT knocking the single parent! I'm having a go at a stupid system invented by a stupid government that I certainly didn't vote for.

I have a bloody good mind to switch from accountancy (yes I can budget thanks) to politics and make things better and fairer all round.

 I work because I have to, income support is not much to live on and I want to send the right message to my kids that you need to work and save if you want nice things in life
