  • Probably just a moult, this years weather has had ours moulting at odd times and all of a sudden. You could check for lice? Have a good look round the bottom area and dust if you see them.

Are they plucking each others feathers out - or is it just malting. Is there a pile of feathers in the coop where they sleep?

No nothing obvious, so hopefully it is just moulting x

hopefully it is just a moult, they look healthy enough and i have checked for mites and they look clear.
They are full of energy and seem very happy, they run up the garden at me as soon as they hear the mealworm bag.

    Thanks for the replies:)

  • Hope you've all had a lovely Christmas.

My girls were spoiled today. They had cooked salmon skin/bits, left over mash and cauliflower from yesterday, sprout trimmings, raw carrot peelings and then some blackberries left out after defrosting my freezer. They didn't want to go to bed in case they missed something else.:rotfl:

Hope you're on the mend Giger.:)

Whilst out cycling this afternoon in East yorkshire, I found a wandering hen on the grass verge of a quite busy road in a village. It was after 3pm ,she was wet through and it was starting to get dark. I chaperoned her for a while and spoke to a local horserider who said she would make enquiries. luckily just then, a lady started to run quickly towards us. I grabbed the chook and gave it to her . She said that another was still missing, but i had to shoot, as i still had another 30 mins to cycle home. I Hope her friend got back safely before Mr Fox came.

Mine too - it's the oddest thing as they haven't laid since September. Have had 2 eggs a day from 3 bantams for the past 7 days (with one day off!!)

I've still got loads in the freezer from the last glut in Sept, it's not the hens who are going to be egg-bound!!!

my girls have not stopped laying at all. regular trips to the local with eggs to exchange for pints.

As for MUD, the run is on concrete with woodchips and straw so we havce avoided the mud issue. However the lawn is not fairing so well now that the girls are free ranging all day. They are going to miss their freedom when i go back to work next week. They look quite amusing pacing to and fro like POWs until i let them out.
