I bought a Julienne peeler for carrots as I hate grating them and found the new hens love carrot sticks. I whiz it into matchsticks then chop it up in lengths of about 10mm. Then I gave them a bucketful of leaves with carrot, chopped grass and dried oats mixed in. It kept them busy a bit longer than usual.0

Good morning . Syman. November is usually the designated time for chicken moulting - strange but true! give them a little cat food for extra protein. I think they moult first after approx 18months HTH
Was in the local poundworld and found a 4 pack of cat food with tuna and jelly. The girls gave me their "are you sure we should eat this" look but once madras started they all tucked in.
And on an amusing note, was in the garden eating a pack of crisps, dropped one and was immediatley noticed and picked up by Omelette after a 30M dash at a speed Usain Bolt would have been pleased with. The ensuing chase around the garden was something akin to the end of the Benny Hill programs.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

My mom is fond of cooking chicken that's why it became my favorite.0

She's really coming into herself now! She's quite a bossy thing, often prods the girls with her bill! And her and Gerry have hit it off now, Margo seems to accept it mostly, although there are definintely times when Margo decides that Gerry is hers!
Hubby and I have both been ill, (hence my lack of posting) so my son is the reluctant chicken keeper at the moment and although we try to spend some time with the girls and boys, with daily hospital visits for myself and earlier bedtimes for the chooks, we don't get much time with them and really miss it.0 -
Oh really, if it's not the chucks who are poorly it's their pets.
Have you been wormed recently ?
Hope you and your OH soon recover.0 -
Haha, have you tried to get Flubenvet recently? :rotfl:0

Day 3 of having to go out and fix the fencing.... came home from work last night and the small shelter/covered run had blown upside down and landed on the netting, couldn't believe my eyes when i got home as the run had lifted even when weighted down with a paving slab.. just my luck the netting is ruined and now am having to get out there again this morning and make a quick plan to keep the chooks in today, I know they must have cabin fever as I put them to bed about 4pm last night, thankfully the run didn't land on any of them.
Sunday my brother will come over and provide a more stable run for them, fingers crossed for decent weather, i don't think i can stand anymore rain!:mad:Thriftkitten

Sorry to hear you are both unwell. I do so hope it's nothing serious and that you are feeling better quite soon. We've missed your postings.:)0 -
What a relief! I have to tell someone and I don't think you will mind. 6 weeks ago we got 3 little red hens and a really expensive but lovely house and run for our back garden.
Trouble is - I have fallen in love!
I find myself spending every spare minute just watching them scratch about, giving them treats, cleaning them out etc. When I'm not doing that I'm buying enhancements to their lives! OH says he's a 'hen widower'.
Who would have thought- level headed, sensible me would be so taken with them??
after a hard day at work I find it so relaxing to visit the girls
And they give us 3 enormous brown eggs practically every day.
I shall have to stop chatting to them in loud voice as neighbours are looking nervous.
Thanks for listening
