hi all ,its my first post on this subject so please excuse my ignorance. I am ploughing through the posts but there are loads!!
i live very much in an estate kind of place. I am detached but due to how the roads lie i do have houses next door and basically all around my garden. I have always wanted chickens and am hearing more and more about chicken in 'ordinary'gardens with a small shed type of thing. Would love them also for g kids to see. But is this set up doable? i only want 2 i think- no cockerel. any thought swould be appreciated0 -
You should get 3 rather than 2, but it's definitely do-able in a small garden.0

We only have two and get 2 eggs every day so that's just ver a dozen a week... Plenty.
We also have neighbours either side and to the back of us.. They are more than happy.... We just rotate giving them eggs and they love itGoal - We want to be mortgages free :j

The trouble with only having 2 chooks is that if one dies, you're left with a lonely girl. Also, I know some breeders won't sell less than 3, for that very reason.0

They were not happy at first, McQueen and Omelette made a bid for freedom over the fence, and spent the day mooching about with Quiche pacing the fence. But they are getting back into the routine.
They don't seem too bothered by the snow, raked off the loose snow out of their run, and gave them another perch to keep them up off the floor.
As for eggs, none of my girls have stopped laying, so over the holiday i was getting 3 a day from mine, and another 4 from the schoolgirls. took them to the local on a few occasions, ending up staggering home.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow..

:rotfl::rotfl:How much do they pay you for the eggs? I sell mine 6 for £1. Did a deal with eggs for some sheet metal cutting the other day - great bargain.0 -

I never ask for anything but generally get a pint for half dozen.

I am waiting for a book to be delivered about keeping chickens as I need to know what I am getting into before i do it. Have also looked at a couple of sites which i will read more when i get the chance. But befre I get all carried away with how nice a couple of chickens would be I need to look at the practicalities. I have been reading all about predators ets but what I havent read yet is what needs to be done on a daily basis and approx what time? obv they have to be fed and watered and I guess cleaned out? does this have to be done every day? every other day? I sometimes go away for the night . Now I know you can get those automatic openers/closers but there is no way of telling if they are in when its closed so I will have to have a think about that one! I dont want to have to keep asking people but if I know at the outset whats needed I can make a decision properly and not just go out and buy something! I need to know loads more before I evenn start thinking baout if its viable for me and if I can do it properly0
