Hi all,
Does anyone elses chickens attack Seagulls and Jacdaws? Mine free range when we are at home and two days ago I heard a heck of a racket outside to find that two of my hens had got hold of a Seagull and were viciously attacking it and had pinned it to the floor. I had to intevene by herding them up the end of the garden so that the gull could fly off.
Hens and gull suffered no visible injuries btw
They have done this several times and particularly dislike the young mottled gulls.
I have also caught them doing the same to a jackdaw that they had cornered in the run of their Eglu .
I just wondered if others had experienced this with their hens? I know that they are territorial .:AToo fat to be Felicity Kendal , but aim for a bit more of the good life :A0 -
Mine chase birds and pretty much anything that comes near and is smaller than them. Mine killed and mostly ate a mouse yuck and have killed a starling. We rescued a frog they were pecking like mad, but that didn't survive either.
I suppose they are protecting their food and "territory".

Wow!
Not seen that yet, but I have noticed that the crows keep out of my garden since the chooks arrived. I found half a mouse in their run the other day, but had assumed that would have been the cats.... maybe not! Time will tell!My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead

The hybrid hens on free range farms have been known to kill cats! Our friends' hens cornered a ferret which had to be rescued before they did it any damage. In a group, they can sort out some predators.0

If they are working as a team it just shows they are not as stupid as some people think. But then we all know that already don't weOh dear, here we go again.0
