    Hi everyone!

I'm just in the process of reading through this thread (on page 115 ATM) but thought I would introduce myself. My OH and I have 3 ex-batts, who we got 2 weeks ago from BHWT. I've had chooks since 2009 when I got 4 ex-batts whilst living with my parents, 3 of them are still around and doing well. We bought our first house a year ago and decided it was about time we got our own chooks (3 being a sensible number since we have a small garden). If anyone's interested I have a chook blog which I try to update regularly: http://chooktowers.blogspot.com

Also noticed that there are a few people on this thread who are from Essex (we're on the outskirts of Braintree), it's a small world! Anyway can't promise to post much on here, but I will definitely be following this thread :)

Hi grn.w.nv (I agree, fab name!). Just had a look at your blog, what lovely ladies you have.

It never ceases to amaze me how any creature subjected to the sort of life they have had can ever recover. I'm sure if a human went through the equivalent ordeal from birth s/he would never become the well-adjusted characters most ex-batts become. But then that would never happen would it, because technically it would be classed as torture.

The sooner this hideous farming method is outlawed the better. Meanwhile, I think your ladies are very very lucky to have found you!
Oh dear, here we go again.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys :) I can't believe that in all the time I've had this username you are probably the only 2 people who have 'got' my name LOL! (Assuming we're both talking about the same thing, nudge nudge wink wink!) BTW it's 'Green with Envy' (as I usually am hehe!) if anyone's puzzled.

Of course I agree that the whole cage thing is totally wrong. My concern about the cage ban which is supposed to come in in 2012, is that these so called 'enriched' cages (which is rubbish anyway, they only get a bit of astro turf for a nest, something to perch on and marginally more space - still totally unnatural), these 'enriched' cages will make people think that buying caged eggs is ok. Clearly it's a step in the right direction, but so much more needs to be done. And breathe!! Sorry, I feel pretty strongly about this, that my ranting done, promise I won't do it again hehe!

Well, he's had his last dose of Baytril this evening, although he's still sneezing a bit, so I popped him back up with the girls. His homecoming wasn't greeted with crowds of adoring girls, even Belle took off at a run when he went running towards her!

Tonight, as they all went in to their various coops, poor little Sebastian didn't know where to go and he seemed a bit distressed. In the end, we had to herd him towards his coop and quickly shut the run when he went in. It took him a few minutes to eventually go in the coop and we shut the pop hole. We hung around listening and could hear him muttering for a bit, then it went quiet. Had a quick peek and he'd settled himself down on the floor rather than on the roosting bar.

Belle always used to hang around with Sebastian, but I guess she's enoyed her independance this last week! I'm hoping that she doesn't give him the cold shoulder for too long.
  • Glad to hear Sebastian is much better.

Thanks for explaining your name grn.w.nv. You had me totally foxed....rubbish at textspeak and usually finish up writing the whole words.

Digger has been opening her beak very wide several times today like a big yawn. Hope it's not Gape worm but in case it is I've started her on Flubenvet.
