Mardatha, try a water pistol with the cat. It won't hurt him or the chickens but should encourage him to sleep elsewhere.

Lucky chickens! They have a playground!
  • Need some advice on chicken runs ,we have a raised bed along one side of our garden it is often shady and untilised,be great for chickens so one side there is a brick wall about 3 foot high the other side will be the new ajoining fence next door are about to put up .My plan is to have a bottomless run built in 3/4 pieces hooking together ,so 2 sides and a top to slot down into the run to keep foxes out , and brick up other end of the run,one end will lead into a concrete/brick recess under our patio (about 2 ft deep x 10 ft wide)which has new sturdy wooden gates, this is where the chicks will be over night. My worry is though would a fox dig under the fence from my neighbours side and how could i cover that problem?

Also the run would be about 2 ft by 24ft long so quite a big space for the chicken to scrape about in could make it quite interesting for them, but will i end up spending a lot for money on the wood and mesh and labour costs? although could agree a price on labour from a friend ? am also looking at the omlet eglu cube not as big and £800!!

I have booked my son on the Children Chicken Keeping course with that farm and planning to book myself on the beginner course once I have got the money together (have overspent on the chickens and run this month already).

We should so book up on the same week :-D Where abouts you from round here?

I've not yet purchased anything. I have prepared my old veggie patch for them. I would really like wooden house with a plastic box sort of interior so I can just lift the roof - take out the box and clean it down and shove back in. Might even try and be cockey and put plastic on the roof of it too inside. But also need to factor in ventilation holes.

I'm in Farnborough. I brought a homemade wooden run and coop from Ebay the other weekend but as the chickens have only been in it a couple of days I'm yet to try cleaning it (other the day to day tidying).

I may order some of under perch trays from Mud Management/Chicken Keeper that I call pull out and wash.

Let me know when your planning on booking and we'll see what we can arrange - I think I'll be waiting until May/June :)

Can I ask if anybody has had an experience with red mite ? Is it as huge a problem as they say on the poultry forums ? My coop has a felt roof but its glued on and I can't take it off.
