Door to the coop is open all day, and only closed at night when the girls go to bed.

I had mine ten days now, and love them to bits. Wanted an eglu but never could have afforded it - got a nice big airy coop on ebay for £100. Only got two hens, not old enough yet to lay eggs but hopefully soon. Mine are on half and half bare earth and wood chips, with the wood on the lower half of the run for drainage so it doesnt get boggy. We put 7ft high fences round the run - and the first day I looked out of the kitchen door and one hen was standing on the step looking back in at me
So we bought a pond netting from B&Q at a tenner and fixed it over the top of the run !

The escape committee regard it as a point of honour to try and get out of Colditz .. Mine can walk up trees - so 7 foot of chicken wire is nothing!

  • hi all

hope you are ok, we had a weasel problem a couple of months ago, which wiped out 3 of our 4 chickens. we cured the problem but wanted to make sure. anyway we now want to replace our stock and we are going to have a cockerel too, and i wondered if anyone knew anywhere or anyone who was looking to get rid of chickens. we are in perthshire. hope you are all ok.

    kind regards

Like they owned the pace? That's exactly what they look like when they're strutting. If they were such a blessed nuisance I can't understand why none of these suburban warriors didn't catch them and eat them for Sunday lunch. That would have taught them

hi noticed you looking at the wooden coops - the ones you are looking at there are made of tongue and groove construction - I got one - and was very happy....for a while

then the dreaded red mite !!!!!- the construction of these means that they are impossible to treat properly with anything - and i did try anything and everything, even the diatomacious powder wont work as the mites can access the chickens without passing through it nomatter where you sprinkle it with this particular design

are eglus worth the money...not if you are keeping chickens so you dont have to buy eggs...you'll never pay it off in eggs...but theyre good design and low maintenance
there are lots of other plastic coops out there too - and a wood and wire run is not a problem -just the coop section - so you could just buy a plastic coop
    happy frog make some
I have a nice one from solway recycling
and I've seem lots of pictures of ones on the internet made from modified from garden stores and large kennels
chickens will NOT boil in a plastic coop in the summer - or freeze in the winter
but wood works well if you have the right design and are prepared for the maintenance - best of luck

Somebody mentioned mixing DE with water, into a paste, and painting the coop walls. Has anybody here tried that ?
