Chooks need the calcium from egg shells or oyster shell. They also need grit to grind up their food in their crops. Don't leave them too long without access to grit.

I am planning on putting a coop up my old veggie patch. This is currently full of soil and will soon have weeds too LOL. What do I need to lay down down the soil for them as a base? Will the weeds be dangerous?

They'll enjoy scratching around in the dirt and might eat some of the weeds, so I'd leave it as it is.

Edited to add, we have a yew tree in our garden which is poisonous, but the girls ignore the bits that fall off the tree, so I think they generally know what's ok and what's not.

Bought them a kilo of mixed shell and a kilo of corn/meal worms. They take it from my hand .

Mine won't touch the nettles that have popped up all over the place.

It is funny watching them when one has found a worm though. It's like the keystone kops with the others all chasing after! :rotfl:

    So true!!! :rotfl:

I just treated mine to a nice new coop off ebay, thought I had lost one of my chucks then heard a scratching sound down the side of the house. It had walked in to the flat box that the coop had arrived in as flat packed and laid 2 eggs in it. nestled in all the paper that was used to pack it. they really made me laugh yesterday all sunbathing and fighting over the dust bath they made.

Can't remember my life before chickens :T
