It had a happy ending. Mother has a lovely flat and frequently goes on holidays abroad with her friends,us children are all settled down with kids of our own and my Dad has NOTHING, no savings and no family, just his little old self left to fend and feel sorry for himself.

I'm glad your Mum, and you, had a happy ending. My Mum didn't have that strength sadly, but I had my happy ending thanks to Grandparents.

Paulineb - I totally agree. Sadly she just won't see any sense, she has her plan and intends on sticking to it. Thankfully her family and friends do what we can to make sure the kids don't miss out on too much.

  • I have a relative who has 2 tops,2 pair of jeans,2 pair of pjs,1 bra and small amount underwear to her name.Does not buy any make up or nice toiletries for herself, never goes out anywhere.hardly has any food in the house.
Her husband has a good job,she works part time.no mortgage and no kids.never goes on holiday. Gives people car boot presents but expects good gifts in return.
Had relatives staying over Christmas and they had to bring food for them all.
She must enjoy looking at her bank balance everyday.

Dear God, but WHY!? Where does this come from? What she poor in childhood? Is she scared of not being financially independent?

To me deciding if you are truly compatible with someone involves getting to know them really well. Whilst you do this the subject of finances and how you each manage this area of your lives should come up. I think if you have a vastly different approach on something as important as that it could negatively affect a relationship.
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Is he mean or is she mean or are they both mean?

Theres nothing wrong with being frugal, looking at my clothes cupboards of which I have way too many and I have enough clothes to last me for years without buying more, Id say not having lots of clothes is fine. Buying thrifty gifts also isnt that bad, holiday, again preference

But for gods sake if you entertain people in your own home you bloody well feed them, thats verging on mental illness in my view.

Years and years ago my dad fell out with his brother, turns out that his brother was lending money to the sisters but kept their family allowance books until he thought the debt and interest were paid!

The crunch finally came when he bought a second hand bike, did it up, sold it to his own wife for his own daughters Christmas present!

    Debt-free and Proud!
Where can I find a frugal guy??
I always find the spend thrift guys who make more than me - yet still end up borrowing from me last week of the month!! (I'm not good with money either!) Or trying to make money somehow and ending up 8k in debt, which is what happened with my last ex :rotfl:

To be honest its my sister. We were brought up to save money and not spend.
She goes to the extreme.I have children and work.I pay my bills, save each month.Buy clothes for myself and family go on holiday every year.Make the best out of life.
I like to make money go further use vouchers off clothes and my food.Buy make up on offer.
But to never buy out is so miserable.

Yes shes mean(my sister),her husbands not as bad as her.
It was our parents who stayed at her house for 4 days over christmas. They brought all the food because they know what shes like.
They came my home christmas eve and boxing day we fed them. It doesnt bother me.
But they let her get away with it because she doesnt like spending money.
