Person_one - I didn't mean he'll be happy while he's dying...rather he was happy in his own way while he was alive. Im not advocating alcoholism - I don't drink much myself and tbh, my mum was a terrible drunk when she used to drink, and I also realise alcohol has caused problems for a lot of people but not everyone who likes a few beers in the evenings can be tarred with the same brush - yes my dad drinks alot, always has, has bad health but he's also one of the nicest people you will ever meet, isn't violent or abusive and tries to always have a laugh and see the best in everyone, one thing he'll never do is die alone.
Paulineb - I mean...how to make £50 stretch a month...I wouldn't know HOW too...sorry if my comments seemed insensitive in any way, I didn't mean them to come across that way
I'm sure your dad's really nice, I don't think people who drink are terrible human beings, I drink occasionally myself, I even get drunk sometimes!
The sad fact remains that it doesn't matter how nice you are when you can't dress yourself or remember where you live, or when you are bleeding uncontrollably, or when you have to have your tongue or oesophagus removed. Very few people say that the taste of beer was worth it when they get to that stage.
Loads of people in this country are slowly drinking themselves to ill health and death quietly in their own homes without ever being anti-social or violent. They aren't bad people, but that doesn't mean the drinking should just be ignored!0 -
The one good thing about having less is that I spend less. Most of the time Im sick of being skint but I know the difference between what I need and what I want. I dont even want to look at old bank statements to see the amount of money I used to fritter away on rubbish. Its very easy done.
I think its easy to get into a habit of feeling like you must spend something every day, Im a bit like that, I might spend a quid or two quid, its not often I have no spend days even if I could have.
Just in the habit of spending money I suppose.0 -

To a point...I do agree with you. When I was young, I used to nag my parents to death about this...but once a person is intent on what they are doing and nothing will stop them. ..going on like a broken record is pretty futile so I just let people do what they do if they're happy enough doing it and not harming anyone but themselves.Saved so far - £28,890.97

Well yes, you're right that you can't make them change or stop, you just have to make sure they know what they're actually doing and have all the facts.0 -
My dad has always been a heavy drinker - my mum too til she got chronic pancreitis, my dad has quite a lot of health problems but refuses to give up the drink and has at least 5-6 cans a night, its a hobby for him as well. I really don't see a problem with it though if it makes him happy, he's not nasty, argumentative or violent - gotta die somehow and you might as well die happy!
My best friend spends £50 A DAY on weed - 18k a year!
As for your first question, I give myself £70 a week 'pocket money' some weeks it lasts and I have change, some weeks it feels like nothing :rotfl:
Not sure how some people survive on £50 a month :O
Your friend needs to reevaluate their life.0 -

Its alot by most standards, but she smokes it like cigarettes! I wouldn't be able to function on that amount but she can't function WITHOUT it, if you see her you'd never be able to tell from looking thoughSaved so far - £28,890.97

a good exercise for those that fritter, don't budget because they have enough, have an allowance to spend, is to do a review of 2013.
Where did all your money go?
what budgets are about is thinking before you spend and making predetermined choices0 -
I'm trying to get my oh to be better with his money to no avail! He blows every penny he gets as soon as he gets it and then always comes to me asking for more! ATM we have a fair bit in savings for our house move in 2 weeks and he's kicking off saying it's upsetting him that he can't have any of that money! Just wanna kick him in the head sometimes! If I left him to save the money away we'd have nothing and would be stuck living with his mum forever xxxDebt free finally :j
First house purchase ... 2018 :j0
