Got the job - but not the job i applied for!

I think if you were in my position you would feel very different.
I find it hard to believe that advertising a post and then placing a candidate in a completely different role is actually legal?
Surely thats some sort of mis-advertisement of post?
Luckily i am in a trade union and in the process of gaining legal advice.0 -

No, it was a campaign for a specific job role.
It was an Operational role..... I have been posted to a strategic role.0 -

Could well be that the post you applied for attracted the interest of an EO in the strategic role during the application process. They apply for the operational post and get that. That still leaves the organisation needing an EO, just that the vacancy is now the strategic role. Do you know if anyone is appointed in the role you thought the campaign was for?
As another poster has said the skills are generic enough to be mobile between departments. What is it that you don't like about the role you're in? And what did you perceive would be different in the operational role?0 -
I was offered a job whilst waiting for the post that i applied for in other parts of the business - to which i replied no, I would like to wait for the job i applied for.
Obviously when i eventually got my job offer and contract i had no reason to believe i was being posted to a different area of the business as i had already said no to any different roles in the first place.0 -
I was offered the other job via email it was more of a " are you interested in other roles we have available" to which i replied " no thanks, i want to stick with what i applied for" that was also via email.
I heard nothing for about 3 months before i got a job offer - to which i thought it was the job i had applied for as they had already been given my preferences!0 -
Do you have a union? Can you ask them for advice? Some of them give you access to free legal advice.
I'm not an expert but I suspect you wouldn't get very far legally* ... you're better off starting to look for another job.
* you'd have to get legal advice to be sure. But, most big companies and government departments are going to have pretty watertight contracts that have been reviewed by lawyers and which allow them to change duties to a large extent.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Ultimately it will come down to what job you signed acceptance for.
Have you discussed with the recruiting officer and the person you sent the email to if different?0 -

And this may be the crux of the issue.
In the private sector even at a senior level roles can switch with little or no notice. I could be employed in sales to look after customer A or in Marketing to manage brand Y both either of which could match my skillset or wich I could find 'comfortable' yet at no notice be switched to manage customer B or Brand Z which could be challenging or cause me anxiety.
In the above the jobe role/title may stay the same but the reporting line/department could be significantly different0
