How can the liberal left accept the views muslims hold towards gay people?

They buy into the geo-politics. Muslims are perceived to be anti-America. Lefties hate America. On the basis of "my enemy's enemy is my friend" they are therefore pro Muslim. Because outrageous hypocrisy is not a problem to the Left (look at all the champagne socialists), inconveniences like attitudes to women and gays can be overlooked. The end justifies the means, and the geo-politics is the priority. Any self-respecting BBC news or current affairs executive could explain it to you.

According to the data, immigration from these countries has already gone into reverse.

But it hasn't.... ONS figures are out today.

There has certainly been a large increase in the amount of Romanians and Bulgarians coming into the country.
The ONS said the number of National Insurance numbers issued to overseas workers rose 7% to 603,000 in the year ending March 2014. Of those, there were significant rises in registrations by workers from four EU countries:
    • Polish registrations were up by 11,000 to 102,000
    • Italian registrations rose by 9,000 to 42,000
    • Bulgarian registrations climbed by 7,000 to 18,000
    • And Romanian registrations increased by 29,000 to 47,000.

The ONS said the rise in immigration to the UK in the last year is "statistically significant".

The Beeb may have buried it, but Sky News are certainly running the story!

And no way is it going to change within the EU regardless of Cameron's renegotiation. But the pressure to stay in will be immense and probably enough to sway the gullible and not terribly bright British electorate. In a referendum the following will all be pushing hard for a STAY IN result :-

The Left, because they see the EU as progressing towards perpetual watered down socialism within a federal setting

Most of big business because it thinks it might lose out financially in the short term if we come out and nothing else matters to it

The broadcast media and much of the press because they are left-leaning

The civil service because it is left leaning but also because it can't face the mammoth task of unravelling the huge bundle of legal and administrative spaghetti if we withdrew

Most senior politicians of all persuasions because it's all about power and influence and they don't want to be left stranded in a little island on the sidelines

Most of the chattering classes, self-appointed intellectual elites, academics, and assorted pontificating windbags from all sorts of walks of life, because they think the European project is the modern, progressive, civilised, enlightened way forward and they want to be associated with those adjectives

Up against that lot will be the right wing press, UKIP, a chunk of the Conservative Party, and a few Labour dissidents. I don't much fancy their chances.

So get ready to welcome a lot more Romulans and Bulgars over the coming decades !

The figures that Gen is talking about in the post you quote are the employment figures for Romanians and Bulgarians (which have been used as a surrogate for migration figures) pertaining to the last quarter, not the year to date. It's entirely possible that Romanian/Bulgarian immigration has gone into reverse in the last quarter of a year of overall increase.
If you think of it as 'us' verses 'them', then it's probably your side that are the villains.

The BBC can't have buried it very deeply - you've quoted them.

Was there a big spike in Romanians and Bulgarians after the New Year?

I heard a lot about the 'flood gates' gates being opened so most of those new arrivals must have turned up in 2014?

Had a leaflet through my door today. Promoting the Social Democratic Party. Most certainly left leaning and want out of Europe.

Made me smile though when I saw our local representative is an immigrant Greek. How times are changing.......

Isn't it somewhat ironic that the Social Democratic Party now supports "withdrawal from the EU"? After all back in the day, the fact that the Labour Party was committed to withdrawal from the EU was one of the main reasons why the Gang of Four abandoned ship and set up the SDP.

    How times do indeed change.

The traditional left, the Communist Party of Britain, Bob Crow's lot, are still anti-EU, see No2Eu. The Green Party are also opposed to the "European project" as well, even if they are a little unclear as to what to do about it.

Extremists on both the far left and the far right tend to have very similar goals in areas such as immigration and isolationism.

That tells you more about the underlying insecurity felt by extremists than it does about the broader politics of the left or right though....

Is your street the only one in the country where everyone has an aerial on their roof and watches TV programs like Hi-Di-Hi and Juliet Bravo,
