Erm stop worrying I think. There's nothing you can do about it. It's a gamble either way whether you get them now or wait.

I walked past the local American Express Travel Services shop today and they are selling US$ at 1.923

Doesn't quite beat the top online places on rate alone but as it's a physical shop you can pay in cash and avoid bank charges.

If you take a look at Martin's article on Spending Overseas, you can avoid banks' loading charges every time :D
  • I don't mean charges for using the card overseas, I mean the charge they make if I use my card to buy currency here in the UK!

Ah right, sorry :o If you look down the travel money maximiser page (here) there is a list of debit cards that do and don't charge fees, if you haven't already :D
  • I'm off to Barbados soon and with the US Dollar Rate being quite good at present, is it worth me buying US$ in the UK and changing them to Barbados $ when I get over there?
    I gather that the US$ and BD$ has a fixed rate of exchange of 1 US$ = 2 BD$ ?

You may find that involves paying two lots of commission - hidden or otherwise
  • Good point! However, I get commission-free travel money (supposidly), either from Marks & Sparks or the Post Ofice. Anyway, I was talking with a colleague, and it seems that the Bajans, in most instances, are happy to accept US Dollars.

:D So given that there are 2 Bajan Dollars to the US$, that means that I would, theoretically, be getting close on 4 Bajan Dollars to the pound instead of 3.64

Bear in mind, also, that almost all my transactions will be in cash! ;)

:j You know, call me sad if you like, but this is what makes a holidays fun!

I've just come to have a check of Crown Currency Exchange against the Money maximiser. CCE was $1.96 for April, against $1.90 at the PO. I've used Crown a few times before (thanks Luci of here, Holidaytruths and Trip Adviser!) and they've been really good and it really makes a difference if you are ordering over a couple of hundred. As you say pay by cheque in return post and the dosh is delivered on the day it's ordered for. I was a bit worried the first time I did it in advance and by post but the rate has been consistantly the best and I've not had any problems at all - and it beats queuing :D
  • i am buying travel money from travelex online using hsbc debit card.
will hsbc debit card charge me any cash advance fee for buying travel money worth £600 ?

    Please help.

    Regards
