    Ooh, excellent blog earnings there! :j :j :j A great start :j :j

Weird weather here too - grey and nondescript to start, then a bout of hailstones surprised me earlier and now the sky is blue and all is relatively peaceful. Interesting times :)

    Brilliant :)

The weather continues weird ... the sky is baby blue again, I think the clouds must be strung out very thin because they're whirling around such a depression so fast ... or something like that :o

Am just downloading a few odd books from fadedpage: this one is entitled "An Account of Six Years Residence in Hudsons Bay, from 1733 to 1736 and 1744 to 1747". I may delete it when I'm done, but these odd little books fascinate me :)

    Bye for now :)

Oh wow! That's really something. I remember one of the Toronto stores, for sure - it wasn't till later that I realised it was **The** HBC!

I've just hopped on again to see if my mum can open a pension with a lump sum thats coming to her, and use drawdown to make it tax free (or something similar) - guess what, you can't open a pension over the age of 75, rats!

Turns out I'm the only person in the family my mum feels comfortable talking to about money ... very odd, considering my financial apocalypse over the last few years :rotfl: but it may be something to do with the fact that I listen to her, and then support her in finding ways to do what *she* wants to do, rather than pushing an agenda of my own.

Been reading about the Paris attacks this morning tho :( and it does all sound so utterly, utterly horrendous. Surprised at first that the football continued, but on the other hand ... thousands more people flooding onto the streets might have created many more new targets ...

  • When Dad died my Mum was in a real pickle because he'd taken care of all their financial dealings and Mum didn't even know how to write a cheque:eek:. Yes, cheques were still in widespread use in those dim and distant days:rotfl:.

My brother sorted out all the paperwork, set up accounts and DDs etc for her but he made it so bloomin' complicated that she hadn't a clue what he was talking about. She was an intelligent woman, as sharp as a tack even in her late 80s, it was him that was at fault:(. He has a background in accountancy and made assumptions that everyone must surely know the basics:eek:

Whenever she wanted anything dealing with or sorting she used to ask me instead of him as I tried to actually explain things to her without the jargon. Having said that, I'm not exactly a glowing example of a financial guru am I?:o. It was more a case of 'do as I say and not as I do'.

I remember those days :rotfl: and that's one problem we never had to face, because my mum always looked after their money. *Her* dad made her stay at school, and she went to college, that's the only reason. Very unusual in those days.

Ouch ... It's not true, is it :( Your poor mum!

I think my mum would have been ok doing the financials after my dad died, as she used to do all the money anyway. Throughout his working life, my dad used to bring home his wage packet and hand it to my mum. She'd then allocate money for all the bills, in a specially made wooden box with lots of little compartments (my dad was a carpenter). This process used to fascinate me - I wonder if that was why I went into banking.

But by the time my dad died, my mum had dementia, so I had to deal with her affairs on her behalf. She had never drawn up a power of attorney, so I had to get authorisation from the Court of Protection. Now that was a palaver - a 36 page application form to start with!

On a side note, I brought that wooden box with the compartments home before I cleared their house. But, even after all the de-cluttering, I still can't find it. It'll turn up one day, I hope

I hope it will, Goldie, it sounds really beautiful, and it must mean a lot to all of you :)

I've been experimenting with ways to use up flour - savoury crumble as I don't want to eat lots of sugar - its gone quite well, I think I could definitely get it down to a reasonable amount of time.
