I read that before I posted, KC, that's why I was baffled:rotfl:. What the dickens does it do? When it's fully functioning that is:p. Does it smoke and dehydrate as well as cook? Presumably it has to be used out of doors so why would you want/need one? Forgive my ignorance on such things but I'm genuinely intrigued.

CBC, its only outdoor for the solar stuff - the rest, notably the haybox, is inside. For that, its just a big insulated box, thats all. Its just a lot sturdier because I want it for other functions. Its not "powered", thats the point, it gets its power from insulation, from existing heat of partly cooked dishes, from solar, and for the smoking bit (which I'm not really sure about yet) from a smoking set up in a cast iron BBQ, French 19th century, I bought at a street market for £10 :) I'd have to make a hood to transport the smoke to the innards of the box (ventilated room for that to be done).

Right now, Gally's freaked me out about the mould, so I'm not going to go into it more than that :o

:eek::eek: Okay, I was giggling at first, and then I read the article ... _pale_ now that's genuinely scary. The mould didn't appear until after I'd had several years of viruses, but viruses plus arthritis mean my immune system is compromised, so mould is *not* good. And it *has* spread to windowsills :(

I don't have many carpets, just rugs. Tell you something I've noticed this last winter with a kilim thats on the floor, though - I had it drycleaned when I moved here, so its comparatively clean for a fabric floor covering, and its in a really well ventilated room, where the window is open for hours, literally. But its got patches of ... don't know what. Not black mould, but something akin, I think, thats white.

Okay, you've persuaded me. Thats the job today, and probably for several days.

I really admire your focus, Gally, and I doubly admire that you're willing to use it on my behalf, thank you!

  • Morning Karmacat, please take GGs advice. Mould causes so many health hazards. Plus whilst tackling it, are you wearing a face mask?

    Take it easy.

  • Thanks for the clear explanation about the cooking/smoking thingy, KC. Much appreciated, and apologies for being so dim about such things:o

I think I'm going to seriously 'up' the pressure on OH to call in an expert to give advice on our mould. I'm going to print out the report that gallygirl gave the link to and he can read it at his leisure. This is a very old house without cavity walls. We do heat it (after a fashion as OH never feels the cold anyway and thinks I'm 'putting it on' when I say I'm shivering:() and I try to keep it well ventilated but in winter it just makes the place perishingly cold. I suspect our problem is largely condensation as it has appeared in patches on outside walls in various rooms and is just impossible to eradicate completely. I read somewhere about some special mould-repellent paint that can be applied but it would mean major redecorating which OH won't spend money on. The paint itself is eye-wateringly expensive. Our finances are separate, he having about £180,000 in savings/shares/bonds etc and me being on a DMP! Obviously I can't afford to pay to get it done and he won't.

Good Luck with yours, KC. At least you only have yourself to please. There's a lot to be said for that:j

I did start looking for something tongue in cheek KC but it actually really horrified me the more I read :(. Glad you're taking it seriously, get it tackled so it doesn't co mpromise your health, especially as you are home-based. Once it's fixed, and the shed thingy roof, then you can play to your heart's content. Sounds like mildew on the rug :(.

Nobody's being dim, CBC - my haybox etc thingy is very much a one-off.

Tilly - I'm not using a facemask at the mo, because I'm spraying it with that HG Mould stuff (that I've talked about twice before on here, apparently )

Gally, yes, its much more serious than your normal linkies :) but it *is* terrifying, isn't it - a woman like that dying in her early 30s, with all her advantages. And as you say, I work from home, so I'm in this environment a good deal. You know what, I think that *is* mildew ..oh my god, I googled and some of the images are horrendous - but the warnings are horrendous too :(

    Okay, action list:
    - HG Mould - 1st coat of today applied in the porch, not all of it has gone. More needed, and I didn't do the whole wall.
    - mildew - image search brought up sort of "rough" areas on walls, of which I have several _pale_ b**gr, I have that too.
    - decluttering is seriously going to help, cos of better air flow.
    - wooden slatted blinds. Also known as dust gatherers. They're seriously impeding air flow, and there's mould on the wall by them. In my bathroom, in contrast, the window blind is one of those mega trendy ones *inside* the double glazing - no dust, no mould. I'm going to have a serious think about those blinds, nice as they are.

I want to run about doing things *immediately*, but careful spraying/ scrubbing away at things is the only way, I think.

:j Well done on your mouldy progress :D. However, this is treating the symptoms (which DO need treating!) - what is causing it - can you do anything about that?

Ah, yes - that was done, honestly. You know that really wet winter we had, 2013/14? My repointing on the weatherward wall was terrible, and the water just came right through the cavity, all over the place, and straight through the single-skin porch extension as well. When the builder came round, he could poke the blunt end of his pencil straight through to the cavity in lots of places  which is why I had lots of bees living in my house wall last year

That whole wall was repointed, a patch of rooftiles replaced, and the porch was coated with this new breathable stuff.

The cleaning's gone well - I can't do it all in one day, but its happening. There's a fair amount of replastering thats also needed

Don't worry, I'm safe :kisses3: though I'm wondering where you're going to be sleeping, now the house is let

The cleaning fluid is a bit strong, so I did a bit in the garden - and oh my, the patio is so much tidier and more useable :rotfl: the last bag of the current crop of topsoil has been moved to a little patch that was easy to weed and surrounded by rooftiles-as-borders :D so I could actually sweep the patio, and once I've lowered the level of the topsoil in the bag a bit, I'll plant lettuces and whatnot directly into it :j

I'll complete my edible garden yet :j:j:j

Yeah - am sooooooooooo glad you are tackling it!

We've been running a dehumidifier since xmas and it makes a huge difference in the black stuff that appears on our single pane windows!
